Hi, I'm planning a trip to Cape York in July and want to tow a 4m boat with offroad trailer as far as possible. I assume getting to Weipa would be no problem but can anyone tell me where else on the cape would likely to be accessible with a good trailer? I'm hoping to get out to the islands and reefs near Cape Melville either from Cape Melville Nat Pk or from the creek mouth at Port Stewart, and maybe other spots on the east coast of the cape further north.
Thanks,
AB

With a good offroad trailer you can go almost anywhere. On our Cape fishing trip we had coil suspension fitted to a standard boat trailer with additional stone & vibration protection added as well as extra bracing for the engine. We took most side trips to the coast & only had minor problems negotiating around the trees on a few tight tracks due to the long drawbar. The corrugations do cause alot of rubbing on the hull so we padded everything heavily with carpet. The boat was almost floating on the Frenchman's :-)

There is some sand to negotiate and some tight sections around trees on the way to Cape Melville.

But worth the effort..........

You will have no issues where you have mentioned above - You can also launch at Chilli Beach at Iron Range

Remember a good rock guard for your boat though, you will need it.
