For those travelling north into NSW from Victoria in the coming few days, be careful on how you prepare your car.

Firstly, place mesh over the front of the car to protect the radiator, and slow to under 80Klms if you come across them. At a low speed they’ll just bounce off and you won’t have much of a problem.

If you do get a bunch of these little critters in the radiator, try to jet spray them out from the back of the radiator rather than the front.

A girl from work just came back from Mildura recently with a car that was a total mess.

Kim

Another piece of advice I heard on the radio the other day is to pull over for a short time if you get into a swarm.
They said the swarm probably wouldn't take too long to fly past if it wasn't too big, and it would save you a lot of cleaning up of your car.

Or you could do what a guy did to my brother. He was towing a large van and had a guy follow him closely for about an hour. They stopped at the fruit fly check and the fellow came up and thanked him for clearing a path through them. This fellow had hardly any debri stuck on the front of his car. Bob.

A little trick I use is spray the front of your car with WD40 or similiar. The locusts will hose off

I agree with Wilko and do the same thing. The spray makes a lot of difference, but at the end of the day, slowing down is the best answer.

The plague has now reached as far south as Bendigo (I’m told). The little critters will be dropping eggs all over the place. So it will be interesting to see what spring holds if conditions are right.

Car still smells of the critters.....fatty little bugga's...still hav'nt got all the fat off the windscreen and front....But underneath around chassis, suspension components and wheels etc etc it is very much a battlefield....I'll need to take it thru a creek or something

50% shade cloth kept radiator clean except for little corner right down low and under bull bar

Spoke to truckie, not not that one, a the other truckie, at the quarantine inspection station just outside Renmark and he said it was really bad around begining april as they were piled up 6 inch's on front of radiator

Longreach had the locusts big time earlier this month , one easy way to remove the mess from the vehicle is to spray with CT18 truck wash and let sit for a 1/2 hr or so to soak ,then blast with hose ,

Agreed re stopping to avoid them if safe - the swarms do 'come and go' as one crosses the countryside. Trying to clean them off last week (from a run through Victoria earlier this month) they can be a real bugger to get off paint and plastics - a really stubborn stain - I think they turn into an adhesive when they die :-o).
Shadecoth is a must.

WD40 on the bonnet and RainX on the windscreen do make the cleanup a bit easier .

I remember cleaning the underside of a V8 XC Falcon after we did a high speed night drive from Adelaide to Sydney.

We hit a mouse plague somewhere during the night and it was 40o the next day.

they were really ripe by the time we got to clean them off in Sydney the next day :-(

Gidday

i remember reading years ago that one of the big three wanted to source the headlights for their new model from Asia. They got some made up but during testing in Australia found that the locust guts actually dissolved the plastic!

Cheers
