NUTS!
Hey all, I'm looking at making a set of rear drawers for my 80 Series Landcruiser, but have run into a small problem coming up with a design: I have 2 kids some of the time and use a roof rack for trips, and have 4 kids on other trips and take a box trailer. I only need to use one of the 3rd row seats when I have all 4, so want to use the entire back space for storage other times.
The drawers I'm thinking of are similar to the
pic below, but with a cage added to the top half above the drawers to make it safe for the 3rd row
seat on the other side:
Verticle drawers (except without the full cargo barrier thats pictured)
A normal cargo barrier split down the center with one half of it able to swing 90 degrees like a
gate and lock into either position would be ideal! I just can't figure out how this would work with the angle a normal cargo barrier sits at, and how to make it structurally sound as
well as safe in both positions....
The only solution I can come up with so far is to have interchangeable barriers and swap them out depending how many kids I'm taking:
-- Standard style full cargo barrier for when I have 2 kids
-- Cage off above the drawers only when I have all 4
(Use wing nuts or bolts with handle welded on for quick release)
Anyone else had this problem and found a solution?
Anyone got any general thoughts or ideas?
Cheers

Hey Nuts,
I can understand your position after just making up a set of draws. Lots of planning required to make everything come together.
I think your best solution would be to make up a barrier to suit each situation. The cost of the steel would be cheap if you weld them up yourself or if you have a mate with a welder.
Have fun.

Geoff

Thanks Geoff, Your right about the planning, and I want to get it right the first time...I have welder and have made crate's for trailer's before, welding the mesh etc. Fiddly but worked ok. I'd planned on doing all of this myself.
I'm starting to think the best solution is to have a cage above/around the draws permanently, then have a normal style cargo barrier that I remove when I want to use one of the 3rd row seats. This means a fair bit of steel in the back....but the only other way I can think of is to make some kind of
gate style barrier, although I'm still not sure exactly how it would work...

Drawers are similar to the
pic below? What
pic?
Do you mean you are only going to put drawers on one side of the boot space and leave the other side empty of drawers all of the time?
You may need 2 separate cargo barriers. When one of the 3rd row seats is in use the barrier may need to extend back to the rear door to create a compartment. If a child is sitting in the 3rd row
seat next to a pile of gear it can't be falling on them. I don't know what the legalities of this is though.

Sorry, i meant to say 'Link' as in:
Click Here for Pic of Drawers
Yes, one side for drawers, the other side for either general cargo space, or for one of the 3rd row seats....
Thanks...
