Was out in the high country last weekend and saw a few hunting groups with big tarps set up that looked great. They were out at the time but the tarps looked like a rubberised canvas that were really tough and quite thin.
Does anyone know what these were, where to get them or what might be a good alternative to the normal heavy duty silver type poly tarp from camping stores? I am thinking 4 or 5m by about 8m type sizes. Has anyone moved from poly tarps to canvas for example?

Boobook,
I actually haven't seen the ones you are talking about, but I have seen a big canvas tarp. It was being made for covering loads on trucks. It was made by our next door neighbour in
Clermont, Qld quite a few years ago. Not too sure if he still makes them or not but try talking to a canvas mob or even a few truckies, as they may have someone who can get you a good deal on one. Would be heavy too.

Blue tarps are hopeless in the wind & really a short term option for the larger sizes. We had a thin canvas one made to order 15 years ago & expect if dried out each time prior to storage will go on for another 20. Plenty of upholsterer's around that can custom sew one up with a choice of materials like this company

go to tarp manufacturer and tell him what you want...light wieght stuff
and get made to to your size.... then get him to strengthen it with rope edges and leather pieces at eyelets.....and depending on size ask for a couple of rope or webbing straps and sewn in across and length of tarp from eyelet to eyelet .....the rope/webbing strap then takes all the strain when the weather gets rough
rip stop (truckie) canvas is heavy
even the truckie poly tarp is heavy ....as it needs to be strong its the heavy weight material (thick)
but and if I am correct it does come in a variety of weights (thickness)

I had a 20ft x 12ft heavy silver tarp for about 15 years without any problems. I had an upholsterer strengthen the main holes though. Just make sure you have poles not more than 6ft apart. It was mainly used at Fraser Island and surrounds.
I just bought a replacement that came with D rings and strengtened holes, I will have to wait and see if it gives me the same service.
Regards
Geoff

Bartletts in
Ballarat make lots of the truck tarps. You may be able to get a second hand grain cover, but they can be huge. Go to
Bartlett Blinds they also make
dam liners
