We recently installed a Steinbauer chip in our 2008 Nissan Patrol ute and proceeded the following day to do a 5 week trip round Tassie on which all went fine with the vehicle until 2 days before we were due to come home - the engine just could not get enough fuel to start when we were stationery in a carpark. RACT came out and we got it going again, no more problems for 130 kms or so, when the same thing happened again - the engine just died and stopped. With any 4x4 club (with whom we were travelling), putting the bonnet up is a magnet and the guys were able to once again get us going. As we were at this stage in a pretty remote place and with motor running, we decided to head back towards civilization and made it to Launceston without trouble and booked the car into the Nissan dealership. They diagnosed a fault with the common rail fuel system, some fuel return valve (this is being typed by the handbrake!) and replaced same at no cost to us as the vehicle is still under warranty. OK, no more problems - we have subsequently done a return trip to Horsham from the Mornington Peninsula and travelled up to Wagga Wagga, some hundreds of kms, before the problem struck again - 3 times in fairly quick succession. On each occasion my husband was able to pump the bulb to get the fuel through to the engine again and could then restart the engine easily. As we were about to start the Darling River Run which would take us miles from assistance, we headed to Dubbo and once again, had the vehicle diagnostically checked by Nissan. The only solution they could offer was the fuel pump which they said 'might' be faulty and could we leave the car with them for 5 weeks or so while they had it checked. Needless to say we did not accept that option and went on our merry way, experiencing not a minute's problem for the remainder of the trip down the Darling or back home to the Peninsula. A conundrum.

Had anyone else experienced this sort of problem a) with a Steinbauer or b) with a Nissan? We'd be interested to hear.

First logical thing to do would be to disconnect the chip as it may not be causing the trouble at all.

Do that and go for a run and see what happens.

If it doesnt do it for a week its probably the chip If it dies without it its something else.

fairly easy decision.

G/Day Alex

We have a 2008 Patrol, and have the Steinbauer Chip installed, have not had any problems at all, have you tried disconnecting the Steinbauer Unit and running the vehicle as normal, not hard to do, or phone the Steinbauer Supplier at Dalby they can give you some advice.

Cheers

If you are having to prime the fuel pump each time to restart the engine then you have a blockage between the fuel tank and the fuel filter.

One obvious cause of this type of problem (apart from a mechanical blockage in the fuel line) is bacteria in the diesel fuel causing a gel to form in the tank, which blocks the pickup, thereby starving the system.

Have you had the fuel tank cleaned out, and are you using a bacteriacide with each fill of fuel??

The best product is Fuel Doctor which is generallly available from places like Supercheap etc. (No affiliation here)

Suggest before you start on anything else you get the fuel tank cleaned out and dose the refill with Fuel Doctor.

The above from personal experience!!!

Cheers

Thanks so much for your comments. I think the bacteria is a point that I have omitted to think about and will now do so. It seems to answer a lot of questions. Cheers Alex
