Spare suspension for the CSR

Who carries shocks and springs as spares?

I will be on the Canning in July in my Cruiser and Camper trailer. I have spare main leaves for the camper and a full set of springs and shocks for the cruiser but I'm wondering if the extra weigh of carrying the cruiser springs and shocks is not more of an issue than not carrying them.. The camper springs are a no brainer and are allready bolted on.

Last year we came across a current series Hilux with broken rear springs on the CSR.

On any remote trip like the Canning I carry a full set of shocks. I run coils all round so don't bother taking spare springs as they're far less likely to break & can easily be patched up to get out to civilization.
Rather than carry a full leaf pack you could take a main leaf, centre bolt & some clamps/wire to patch it up thereby saving alot of weight & being less likely to break them in the first place.

Crackles, how do you easily patch up a broken coil?

I have 2 main leaf and support leaf sets bolted to the camper using the spare U bolts and rear shackles. I also have spare centre bolts. I don't carry the rest of the pack.

When a coil breaks it's generally not that bad a news as it doesn't actually locate the suspension like a leaf does rather it just holds the car up. Usually the break is in the top third so you just need to rotate the coil so it overlaps then use a couple of hose clamps to keep them together. I broke one on the anandoned section of the Gunbarrel then proceded to drive all the way back to Melbourne. Other than it sitting 40mm lower on that side it barely made any difference to the handling. The 100 series does have the added advantage of an internal bumpstop that keeps the broken coil basically aligned & stops it dropping out.

When I did the CSR, I took spare dampeners only. The corrugations made the dampeners heat up and burst seals or crack on the joins.

I took my time and the other suspension components came thru unscathed.

I found there were people who were rushing to do the trip. This is when a lot of issues came about.

One moron was trying to do the trip in 2wd in his 4wd. It was like it would have been a badge of honour to do so. Meanwhile he was tearing up the track.

Take your time and stop and check components regularly and you should be ok.

Agree- Straight oil shocks like Konis seem to run cooler.

We've added 3 days to our Gunbarrel / CSR trip due to the deteriorating nature of the tracks. Met some real idiots last trip- overtaking us on runup to dunes, bad mouthing us on the radio because we didn't park on the spinifex. Told us to stay out of their camp when they surrounded a usable well with their tents. Out there you may need lots of friends, it doesn't make sense to be antisocial- real idiots they were.

I used to decrease weight by not carrying spare shockies on the CSR. The track is so rough in parts now, I would recommend carrying shockies.

Cruiser springs should not be required but some lighter models like Rodeos seem to cop a hammering. I came across 3 rodeos with broken springs in 2008, and two coil cab patrols with broken chassis- one of them mine :-)

Carrying the main leaf may be an option for those who are handy, because Rodeos and the like break the main leaf at the eye.

I've done the CSR 3 times from top to bottom (last time in 2009) and once from W33 to W1 and have seen a lot of spring damage and shockie problems. Almost all caused by overweight vehicles, hard tyres and speed.

I have seen shockie failure to many known brands including Konis, old Man Emu and so on.

Here's what I recommend and what I would do about -

Shockies
I would suggest that you carry at least one front and one rear shockie.

Springs
From what I have read of you post I presume you have coils all round. I would string suggest fitting poly air type bags to the rear coils. This helps the coils immensely and reduces significantly coil spring damage / failure.

I have an LC105 so yes coils all round. I will carry a front and rear shock but I don't think I'll do the Polyair thing. The springs are 600kg OME's so they should be up to it I think.

Overweight vehicles on the CSR???? Never! :-)
Hard tyres, well not in my case.
Speed- definitely not.

The polyairs will assist if shocks fail, as they add some stiction which prevents coil binding. Coil binding with failed shocks is what kills ahhhemmm overweight Patrols.

Great thread as we also get ready to do the Canning this year. On all previous trips I carry one front shock, one rear shock and a rear spring. For the camper a main spring and various U Bolts, nuts etc. Over the Simpson we did see three trucks with broken springs
