Batt. ?

Hi guys, I left a deep cycle wet battery standing for 4 months, what is the likely hood of this battery being no good? It is about 12mth. old still reads 12.5v. I want to use it to run fridge on a up coming trip. Do I have to do any thing to it or can I put straight back into service ? or will I have to pay the price for being lazy.

thanks
Al

If it's still got 12.5v, I'd say there is a very good chance of it being ok.
Just put some charge back in it, and I'm sure you'll be ok.

Be careful - 12.5V doesn't indicate the actual capacity.
For example, I have 2 ~40AH cranking batteries which have their expected 12.7V (after removing surface charge).
But they probably only have ~5AH of capacity. (They are 8 years old and have has a tough life!)

Although voltage is a good indication of how much of a batteries capacity remains, it is not a good indicator of capacity. (ie, 12.5V means ~80% capacity remaining whether that capacity is its new full rated or worn out capacity.)

The only way to be reasonably certain is a capacity test.

And yes - after standing, a heavy charge current is usually required - typically 20A or more.
And it may improve with cycling and high charge currents.

Best bet is to use a charger that has a "conditioner' setting, otherwise just run something on the battery keeping a close eye on the voltage (don't let it drop below say 12.2 volts (=50% of the charge), then recharge and repeat. Should be fine. I have recovered a battery that was 18 months in storage without use using this method. Maybe the battery gurus have a better method....???

yep Fred,

this conditioning or equalization stage is definitely recommended for this type battery which was left standing for a while. Stirs up the electrolyte and dissolves sulfates.
