G'day
I have a 2001 Nissan Patrol 4500 Auto dual ULP & LPG
When towing my Windsor 21.5' van using petrol the vehicle overheats: this can be when idling or towing on flat roads at 85k's (around 2000 revs). On hills I turn off the OD button and also switch to power drive.
The car has been checked by tow mechanics one in Hughenden and one in Charters Towers. Both said everything was working well.
Anyone had the same problem or do have some suggestions
Thanks
PeteM

Does it overheat under the same conditions when running on LPG?

Has had similar issue and found the inlet to the water pump had a piece of corroded hose spring lodged which restricted the flow of coolant. Good luck

Thank you. I will check that out.
Do you have the name of a good Nissan Patrol mechanic in Townsville?

I use TMShttp://www.tms-mechanical.com.au/ when I don't want to do it myself. Although they don't "specialize" in 4WDs they seem to be very good. Just talk to Peter and go from there.
Cheers

As he said corroded springs in the lower hose and they can also allow the hose to gradually suck in closing off and restricting flow. Most wouldnt notice this you have to give it constant revs over 2000 on a hot motor while watching the hose. Also has it got thermos on that vehicle or a viscous hub as this could be losing a bit of oomph and not locking up tight enough. Also if its only petrol get your exhaust gases checked under load on a dyno it may be leaning out at certain revs.

If it's the radiator hose why doesn't it do it when running on gas?
GU RULES!!

is there a build up of insects/grass hoppers /gass seeds etc on the aircon and or radiator cores

hi
peter m
also if your patrol still has std exhaust system you will find it will run a lot cooler

and pull better if you install a larger exhaust/muffler system 2.5" or 3"depending on whether its a 3ltr or 4.2 engine

a larger exhaust allows the engine to breath more freely and get the spent heat away in a free flow manner i'm sure there are other patrol owners out there who will confirm this

this improves most vehicles no mater what brand
cheers

Yes exhaust enlargement dose make a difference but if the over heating is something that has become abnormal then please investigate and corret before masking the issue with mod's. TMS will advise but Parkes Exhaust will do the work
(they did my Patrol) for around $1-1.5k

Generally auto's kick down on hills, when revs drop a little, or things start to strain.
Do you manually pull down gears ?
I am sort of wondering if there is a reving problem, like not enuf !

Mostly I keep 2300 - 2500 rpm on hills, and do not get overheating.

Things get hot in my patrol, when I get lazy, and hang on a little longer to the gears.

Cheers
Bucky

Thank you Bucky and everyone else that have offered advice/help
When approaching steep hills/inclines I normally switch over to ULP as I feel that I don't get enough power from gas.
We are leaving tomorrow to travel up to the Tablelands/Innot Hot Springs so I will switch the OD offand keep the revs up and do a bit of manual gear changing.
The power button being used seemed to help too
Oncde again trhanks
