Type of Road is Tanami Rd.

Hi I'm travelling along the Tanami Rd from Halls creek to Alison Springs. I've never travelled this rd before. I'm just wondering what it's like. I.E difficult easy. 4wd only etc.
.
I will be driving my 1998 Toyota Hilux dual cab with a rear locker and winch etc.
.
Thanks

Depends of course on when the graders went through, but generally not challenging to a 2WD. After lots of rain it may be closed, but otherwise just drive to the conditions, no 4WD, no winching.

Dave,
Have you had a look in the Treks section - blue button in the bar above the forum. There is good info there on what to expect.

Cheers,

G DAY! John7 Val

I have just come through the tanami from stuart highway to Halls creek and is fairly rough laet bit to halls creek but other wise ok to corrugated. if you need fuel at rabbit flats it will cost you $2.30 ltr so top up at tilmouth if possible. if any body interested the plenty is in reasonable to good conditions but still plenty of wash outs that havnot been repaired yet there is a grader working from th N.T end with the the Donahue having a lot of up grade going on. trust this will help you. there is up grades going on the tanami as well

To start with it's a well maintained high speed dirt road which deteriorates almost to a single lane track past Balgo, rocky in places with rough creeks then changes to corrugated sand for much of it. Coming into the NT it gradually improves finally becoming a 4 lane dirt freeway around the mines. Surface changes depending on the grader & rain but most 4x4s with good tyres wont have too many issues.

Excellent description there Crackles. Unless your on a moter bike :-) We saw one fellow who was stopping every half hour to let his bike cook down.

I also see they have all but approved the sealing of this *road* now to help with stock out of Broome to Alice. Shame to see an Icon go but there you go. Same for Cape Leveque road. Almost all over :-(
