Hi all.
I have a 78 series V8 landcruiser troopie (2007). I find the original seats very uncomfortable after about 2 hrs on the road and I would like to change them. Can anyone recommend a seat that they have fitted to a similar vehicle.
Thanks

We had a pair of 'PARATUS' seats in our Troopy. Both me & the missus have crook backs- and those setas were very good..

I have Paratus seats installed in my Troopy, a bit pricey but we we spend a lot of time in them and they are very comfortable.

Garry,

I have a 80 series and I have had a lot of back issues. I ended up with Stratos XTLTSS Suspension seats. There not cheap but they are brilliant. I went from not being able to spend any longer than 45 mins to around 3 hours in the car.

Member Sir Kev on here also has a crook back and the same seats.

Hope this helps

these are the seats: Stratos Suspension Seat

Yep I have them as well ;)

I have had my 1st issue with them in the last month as well :(

The seat does not seem to lock itself into position when heading up steepish terrain, which I might add is a PITA especially when you end up not being able to reach the go pedal :(

I have not yet had it sorted (it is on the to do list) but I suspect that the locking lug has worn. I have to check it and then follow up with Stratos as the seats are made to order (6 week waiting time minimum) and for this to happen after 2 years of use, I think they will come to the party.

Cheers Kev

Thanks Matt. About what is the cost. Opp Lock quoted me $2800 fitted for two Stratos 3000 Compact. Thinks its the budget model.

For 1 Stratos Suspension seat fitted was $2400 for me, or should I say DVA paid to be fitted

Cheers Kev

Hi Gary,

We have a Recaro for the passenger seat of our Troopy. It's so much better than the original 1.5 seat and much better than the driver's seat. We should have put two in.

Google "aftermarket seats" & have a look at the "After Market Seat Guide"
that mentions Overlander Magazine. There is a rundown on some brands,
including those already mentioned above.cheers....oldbaz.

Garry,

I purchased 2 x Ricaro Specialist L seats. They have been excellent and can be swapped from vehicle to vehicle in the future.
The original seats are crap on long distance travel and also uncomfortable on rough terrain.
Highly recommend the Ricaro's.

Hi Garry

Remember 1/2 the problem is with the lack of wheel articulation in those cars often actually made worse by after market suspension.

Have friends who went thru same issues and got aftermarket seats which helped but on a long trip still suffered and the simplest of things such as dropping there way to hard tyre pressures helped.

Consider adjustability in the suspension as part of your solution.

Thanks for your feedback Robin. I still have the original suspension. Any idea how I may have it adjusted to soften the ride.

Hi Garry

That can only be done with a proper knowledge of the load you carry.

But I think your model is one where rear axle track width is narrower than the front , if so then I would correct this first with aftermarket wheel spacer kit from places like snake racing.

If you car is well under max load when its to rough , your solution may be as easy as removing a rear leaf and resetting a front spring , if not then you have to move in the direction of an aftermarket item which deflects more per unit load.
Recently on a falcon ute - we removed a single leaf and it made the car so much better as it was more level and softer, we could only do this because the car never carried full load anyway.

Then back it up with adjustable shocks. I not another thread is running in which owner used the adjustables to good effect.

Also if you have hard lumpy tyres , borrow a set of softer ones to try , they can make quite a difference - as per my lower tyre pressure suggestion.

Just wondering if this will help to clarify:
On my old Rocky, I fitted second hand seat suspension units (Stratos or similar) which replaced the factory seat bases, but they reused the factory squabs and seat backs. So all the improvement was is the gas suspension.
This is obviously different to replacing the seats, as in fitting Recaros, where you are getting the support and fit of a fundamentally different seat shape.

Garry,

Are you going to be at the national gathering in June? We will be travelling from Ulladulla on the South Coast NSW over to Wiluna then into Perth to check on our rental property. If you want to have a look/sit in our seats I sure we can organise something.

I fitted a pair of second hand recaros 5 years ago - well worth doing, but you have to move the seat belt mount if changing from a 3 seater. They are great on the long trips and you can usually buy a pair of second hand seats for under $1000.
A recent thread on LCOOL is worth reading too, but you have to sign up:

Garry

I have fitted a Stratos 3000LTSS seat to my 2009 V8 trayback. As I state on my profile page this is the biggest single improvement made to the vehicle. It cost $1813 installed about a year ago.

Prior to fitting it I had backache after only a half hour in the vehicle over smooth bitumen roads. After a few hours I had problems straightening up. Some fiddling with the suspension may reduce the jarring but the best move is to replace the seat. The seat is not the right shape for most people and that is the real problem.

The choice of Stratos was problematical for me as I had (and still have) two old Recaro seats that I originally planned to use. (Anyone want some 1984 Recaros dirt cheap?) The Stratos has proven to be a better choice for me and I would recommend them without reservations.

The original seats my cruiser came with are terrible. One day I will replace the passenger seat as well. The main reason I got the GXL instead of the GX was so the seat replacement of the passenger seat would be a little easier.
