We have 2002 GU Patrol 4.2 turbo built 6/2002. Was the gearbox problem fixed by Nissan before this?

Hi cazgord
i don't think the 4.2 had problems with the gear box. The 3lt had problems with the engine which some say was fixed by 05, i hope so as i have an 05 model. whats wrong with your gear box? 5 gear?

The 4.2 certainly did have problems with the gearbox.

As an owner of a Dec 99 build GU 4.2, I concur that there were problems. Originally it was thought that only Series II GUs were dicky, but it extended back into the later Series I models. And it was initially claimed that towing was the problem, but
mine failed without ever towing. I think it was resolved by Series III.

5th gear in the early GU 4.2s had a problem but was supposed to been fixed in early 2002. My GU was built about the same time as yours and hasn't had a problem as yet, But saying that although it's a constant heavy loaded car it doesn't really tow anything. You can always check here

Hello
my sons 2001 4.2 had what seemed to be the usual 5 th gear problem about 4 weeks ago but once pulled down it turned out to be the teeth on the 5th / reverse selector yolk had sheared off on the 5th gear side ,either way it ended with $4000 less in the bank but a fully reco box and new heavy duty clutch.
Good luck Vic

THanks Michael , its actually correct but its messed up by the underlining the site does , in fact to make it work I copied it by running the cursor from left to the right to highlite it then hit copy otherwise it didn't fully copy.
It says problem fixed in 2004 and they advertize $1500 gearsets to fix the problem first.

The easy way to check if your vehicle is affected by the problem is to take it to a Nissan dealer and they can check based on VIN and engine numbers.
Mine is a 2001 model, has doen a fair bit of towing and has never had a problem.

Keep an eye on your oil quality. It should remain clean and if its not there are issues that will need addressing. I believe the issue was the 5th gear being a bit shorter in length and was rectified in later models.
