Gday.
Looking to get a new vehicle and this is my second thread on the matter. It’s great being able to search the forums and ask advice… I had been looking at Jackaroos but went off the diesel when I heard about the problems with the injectors and heads cracking etc. I understand the petrol Jackaroo is not a bad car but would really prefer a diesel. Now looking at a 1999 NISSAN PATROL GU ST with the 2.8 L engine. There are a few about in Victoria with around 150000 kms on them. Curious as to peoples thoughts on these vehicles. I’m coming from a 2F FJ45 troopy. I don’t tow much or often and realise they are not going to break any land speed records. Just after peoples thoughts on these vehicles. Anything to watchout for, common problems and the like.
Thanks for the help.
Brendan

I had one for 180,000k. Never had any problems with it & couldn't fault it. Not as powerful as the modern diesels but it certainly held its ground with vehicles of that vintage.
Only sold it because we wanted a ute.

To slow to be safe for me Brendan , and not enough power to get out of a decent sand blow , but thats not for everyone and we probably need to know more about the type of use you would put it to - remember its basically a car gearbox not like in the other GU's.

Hi Brendan, I had a 2.8 GU for 5 years (I don't know about the GQ 2.8) ST Manual and thought it was a great vehicle went everywhere in it,towed horse floats, camper trailer & Caravan, whilst it was no rocket you basically had to drive it on "boost" to get any performance out of it. Four wheel driving was excellent although you have to drive them accordingly whilst my mate would climb a steep track in low second (80 series cruiser) I had to be in low 1st to keep the vehicle on boost otherwise it was a handful to drive. I did 178,000km in the Patrol without a hint of trouble & based on that I would recommend the vehicle to you especially if it has v/good service records & obviously has bee
well looked after. Unlike other Patrols the 2.8 GU has 95kw with 252 nm of torque. The 3 ltr 118kw & 380 nm torque, the 4.2 114kw with 360 nm torque and the 4.8 Petrol motor develops 185kw & 420 nm of torque & is still one of the most powerful 4WD's around however very poor fuel economy but then again you could run LPG too with a power loss & I personally don't like petrol vehicles in the bush but that is only my opinion. Hopes this helps. Regards

Hi Brendan
HARD CHOICE buying new vehicles ????
I am driving a Forester at the present....however I have had 2 Jackeroo's one petrol and one diesel and both used vehicles each had their pros and cons but against other second hand 4x4 I would certainly look at the latest model you can get in PETROL. Jackeroo is still a good all rounder at a good price

Brendan at lest take a 3.5 v6 Jack for a drive you will be amazed at the power, and smoothness, and silence after the 2f. Not knocking the 2.8 gu, but they would not see which way the 3.5 went.
Mine is quicker then my old 253 LH SLR with better economy. But if you intend doing desert runs go diesel, the 2.8 diesel Paj is also a good thing.
Cheers Pete

The 2.8tdi GU is a great vehicle. I had one for 10 years did 340000km and didn't have a problem.....until the harmonic balance came loose and I wasn't quick enough to spot the problem. I would recommend you check this part closely to ensure that it hasn't been bodgied up and if all clear just check torque it every other service.
