Hi folks,
can anyone steer me in the direction of a good handheld GPS unit around the $400 mark (or lower). I had an old Magellan Map315 for years, but it finally spat it and I need a newie.
Looked at the Magellan Triton 400 and the Garmin Dakota but many reviews have been a bit lacklustre.
SD card expandability would be handy as I already have the Natmap Raster series on CD and DVD.
12V ciggie lighter attachment would be nice too.
Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Garmin Map 60 csx will be a bit more expensive than $400 though

Hi V8Diesel
Might be worth having a look at the Garmin GPSmap 60 CSx.
Seems to fit the bill for what you have mentioned are your requirements.
I got
mine from GPSOZ in
Sydney, good service and advice, this is my first 'hand held'. 2 X AA bateries, cig lighter or USB powered, micro sd card for maps. I bought a Ram mount kit for it, the heavier duty one, and its very stable.
Only problem I can think of is reflection of the sun on the screen, but this is typical of many brands/models, just have to fiddle with it to get the best angle for viewing. Small screen isn't the greatest, but again not much different to most others in this price range/style.
No affiliation to GPSOZ etc etc.
Good luck with whatever you decide on
Cheers Dave

Agree - my only (personal) issue is Garmin not using
grid references.

"SD card expandability would be handy as I already have the Natmap Raster series on CD and DVD. "
Hi, Most handhelds will be unable to use these maps in their original form. If you want to use raster digital maps you will best served getting a unit that can run a program like OziExplorerCe or TwoNav (eg PDA, Magellan Mobile Mapper 6, unlocked Trition 1500/2000, TwoNav Aventura/Sportiva).
There is a vector version of the same 250K data available free for Garmins called Shonkymaps. There are also free detailed mapping (streets mainly - OSM) for significant areas of Australia (and the world). These can be loaded onto most garmin handhelds and save costs. So based on your $400 budget I would suggest either a GPSmap 60Cx, GPSmap 76Cx or a Legend HCx. You will need to investigate specifications, functions and cost of accessories to make you own final choice.
If you cranked up your budget I would include Garmin Oregon 450 in the group.
If you go down the Magellan path you will need to also purchase maps as freebies are less readily available than those for Garmin. I also notice the Triton 400 is closer to $500 than $400. Detailed maps will set you back another $250 - $300.
Cheers
Greg

Hi V8
Yes - Garmin CSx 60. I purchased
mine a few months ago and have been out in the field with it - works great. I also purchased the Ram mount kit for it which makes it really handy to sit in between us so navigator can also see where we are while looking at maps.
