Went to the Rosehill caravan show and bought a 40 litre fridge plus a few other odds and ends.
Anyway I think,,,,
well know that I am now a bit over the weight for a trailer with out brakes.
So,, I went to the local spare parts
shop and the drums, backing plates and fitting would cost $650.
This does not include the Prodigy and wiring.
Should I
shop around, or is this a fair price?
The other alternative would be to leave the boss and her gear at
home, but this option was quickly rejected.

does it also include the new towing hitch which includes a handbrake>..also you'll need new wiring on the trailer as
well.

No mention of those items at all!
I think I might find a trailer with brakes and see just what is involved.

The other thing to consider once a trailer goes over the 750kg break point then the axle and springs need to be spec'd accordingly too...you might be lucky but just ask the question around your intended load

Gazza I think I am ok.
The axle is 45 mm round and
the springs are 7 leaf rebound.

I converted my son's work trailer to electric brakes about five years ago. It cost $1100.00. That included drums, shoes, backing plates and magnets but did not include the controler or cabling and that was for a tandem axle so I would expect that the price you were quoted is OK

It could be
well worth the time to
shop around.
I converted my CT to electric brakes for $200 , bur that was over a year ago.
There is a trailer fabrication place in Beenleigh that sold the drums etc for around $75 per side. Added some new cable, and wiring etc for another $30, and some bolt plates welded onto the existing axle for $20.
We already had a cable handbrake, so didn't need a new coupling, and the car had a Tekonsha controller.
With PM SuperKev in charge, this may
well cost $400 plus now, but I'd try a few phone calls.
Cheers
