Hi - hoping you guys can help

I am looking at getting a 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 and was wondering if anyone had any advice on what sort of things to look out for. The main issue is that the car has done 170,000kms (albeit mostly country driving) and I cant find much on the net about what goes wrong once they get up to that sort of mileage.

PS - have tried searching on this site but I am not sure I am using the search function properly - I type in "discovery 3" and get all sorts of stuff come up....if anyone can help or knows of any threads where this may have already been covered, please let me know

Cheers
Darren

Any reason why you can't find one with less KM's..? I think it's fair to say you can play it safer no matter the vehicle when there's less K's involved, but not always. Not to mention having the vehicle properley inspected and tested prior to purchase , service history etc etc is a must. The on-going service costs and parts costs of the Discovery should also be investigated if you haven't owned one before. I think it's fair to say they would cost a little more to run than a Toyota or a Nissan etc etc.

Thanks for the links guys

Terra Firma - used TDV6s are extremely hard to get in WA at the moment - there is effectively a waiting list at the main dealer in Perth and this is the only one thats available - most have been put off by the high mileage but they have offered a good deal. you are ight tho - need to find out the servicing profile and costs and worst case scenario costs eg if the gearbox needs replacing

DJC 435,

170k is not a high mileage for most diesels, many will do 400k and more with correct and regular servicing. Check the owners Service manual for this.

As others have mentioned find someone who knows what to look for and have the vehicle checked out before you finally commit yourself to purchasing.

There are a couple of places in Perth that I can recommend from personal experience (no affiliation, just a satisfied customer)
1. Kevin Falconbridge at Jordan Rovertech in Bentley or
2. Discovery Autos in Malaga.

Getting either to check out your prospective purchase would be worth the money spent.

Parts for Landrover are a bit more expensive that the other makes but major rebuilds repairs are roughly the same if you are paying someone to do the work.

You will find a lot of Landrover related information at aulro.com

Hope this helps

Disco.

I rang Jordan Rover tech who were very helpful.....

For anybody's benefit in the future, he said that Discos have a major, major service at 160,000kms and its important to check that the timing belt and auto/ transmission have been looked at properly, although he said its hard to tell retrospectively......

I will be getting them to do an inspection on it

Cheers

34,000klm per yr 'country driving', would sooner have that than the average Brisbane Qld commuter doing stop start of 500klm per wk [26,000 per yr].

Darren,
I know this will upset some people, but I wouldn't buy one at 170,000kms, but I would buy a Toyota at 170,000 kms.

I reaseached the issues a while back and the consensus was the air bags need replacing around thay kind of K's. About $1K I think, no big deal so long as it's in the budget.

Any high Km vehicle is somewhat of a risk but it comes down to the price eh?
