Oh wise men, SWMBO has told me to ask on here, so here goes. I have a front ARB Air Locker and it has worked fine for last 15mths. All this time I have had a growling noise from the left front wheel every time I disengage 4wd and run on hard surfaces, this isn’t when unlocking the diff just when moving back into 2wd.

I personally believe its the free wheeling hub not disengaging properly, this is on a Mitsi Challenger and the free wheeling hubs work in the same manner as Tritons and around the 2000 model Pajeros.

With the ignition turned on and rotating the passenger side front wheel it makes a sound like a wheel weight hitting a piece of rubber, ignition off and no sound?? I know these free wheelers are electronic in operation. I thought if it was a faulty diff it would be noisy all the time, no matter what. Oh and by the way since this has got really bad the locker has now stopped working.... (Maybe free wheeling hub half engaged)???

I know the diff will probably need removing, just wanted to know if anyone had any ideas???

Sounds to me like the auto hubs not locking/unlocking properly. I would start be having them serviced/inspected.

Thanks Guys,

I would say if you read between the lines thats exactly what I think also, if it were the diff it would be noisy all the time as the Mitsi diff turns constantly and has a clutch on one of the axles which turns off the connection. This is basically the free wheeling part of the system and the part I believe that is probably failed.

Cheers

Have you tried reversing a little after you change to 2wd (to unlock the hubs)?
