Hi to All Again
While I have been keeping all updated with the progress of the Cooper Creek and its progress towards the Birdsville Track, I would like to share some facts and figures on what the locals along the Birdsville call the “Ancient Punt”

Before I get shot down by one regular knocker who keeps on insisting “As discussed the subject is now closed.” The facts that I will give come from the SA Farmers most widely read weekly newspaper “The Stock Journal”. On page 10 and 11, there is a great story by Louise McBride and the now very outdated 40 year old punt.

From government figures of the 1990’s flood event, the average number of cars of the Birdsville Track was 24 vehicles a day. Shane Oldfield who has lived on Clayton Station all his life said that he now seems that number of vehicles go past his front gate every hour. Sharon Oldfield from Cowarie Station said what will happen when there are 8 decks of cattle (200 head per loading) wanting to cross the ferry at 12 cattle per crossing?

Here are the facts for the “Ancient Punt”

Powered by two 15hp outboard motors.

20 Minutes per crossing during daylight hours only.

10 tonne load limit – one vehicle, one trailer or 8 tonne of stock

Temporary yards for stock not erected as yet

Ferry use includes:

July – December 1974:1266 vehicles, 1873 stock

October 1989 – January 1990: 1072 cars, 13 trailers, 2704 people, 1 stock horse

July 1990 – January 1991: 3665 cars, 457 trailers, 76 motor bikes, 142 Tracks/Buses, 61 tractors/front end loaders, 10,155 people, 122 cattle, 53 horses, 41 camels, 1 pig

2010:????????????????

So what will the figures be for this estimated 6 month closed Birdsville Track.

Cheers to All

Stephen

Thanks for the update, Stephen, appreciate your effort. Was planning a trip down the track to Maree, in July, then up the Strez to montacoola bore, but that is now looking doubtful oh well there is always another trip to be done.

Hi Burto
I would not put it off yet. Even if it is an "Ancient Punt", it will still be an experience that could be many years again before water again crosses the Birdsville Track.

Jason has told me that the country up there is looking unreal, so it would be worth the drive just to see that, as well as the Cooper over the Track.

Have a great trip where ever you do go.

Cheers

Yes Stephen, thought about it this morning, we were going to go down the track from the Qld end and then do the flinders and Gammon ranges, now planning to go in reverse, up the track and if there are any problems or extensive delays we can backtrack to Maree and do Oodnatta.
Once in a lifetime chnace to see the "ferry", if it floods in another 20 years I will be 80 years young.
Cant wait, for the trip that is

Hi Deanna
If you have never been into that country before and even with the "Ancient Punt", it will be a year to go there just for the water and the rebirth of the country from all that water.

I will keep you informed.

Cheers

Stephen, a great update - very interesting facts will make for some more good conversation around the fire tonight.
When the floods came in 1996/7 Ian and I decided to be married on the punt crossing the Cooper - that was the plan.Well, as you probably know the water didn't make it far enough that year so on to Plan B and we were married in the (then) garden at the Birdsville Hotel. Ian had been on the punt in 1990 but I would love to cross over the Cooper on the punt - be worth a trip down there just for that.
Thanks for all the updates - don't take any notice of the 'knockers" - poor things, just jealous.

Hi Ruth
Speaking with Jason yesterday, someone had changed his "Crossing Date" down at Clayton to the 5th June. He said he did not do it and still has his money on the 20th June.

The trip up the Track this year will be worth it just to have a ferry ride, but from what was written in the Stock Journal, it sounds like that there will be very big line ups to get across.

You could always go down and renew your Wedding Vows!

I bet Ian is out the flat out fishing, it must be unreal.

Take care and get reading if the influx of all the tourists.

Best Regards

Hi Wilko
Yes, there were some good facts. The one I find funny is the "1 pig"

The country must be looking so unreal, that is for sure. The down side is that I have a trip planned for August, so at this stage it will be a quick 4 day trip in June, just to see the water.

Cheers

"The one I find funny is the "1 pig" "

Local constabulary obviously found an alternative route :)

I sent one final shout after him to stick to the track, to which he replied “All right,” That was the last ever seen of Gibson - E Giles 23 April 1874

With so few crossing's per day it may be better the tourists stay away so the locals wont have to wait 2 days to use the ferry to get their pig to the other side. Jokes aside it's clear there wont be enough capacity on the old barge for today's traffic as at best they can only do about 1200 crossings a month & that's how many use the Birdsville track over the weekend of the races.

Hi Craig
There was some talk that the locals would have right away over tourists. The other concern was that if there was a Road Train with stock, it would take about 3 complete days just to ferry the stock, with no road transport using the ferry during that time. As for the Birdsville Races, they are advising people not to use the Birdsville Track, as there is no way that it would be able to cater for the 2000 plus vehicles that usually use the Track at Race time.

Cheers

Thanks for that - certainly some interesting facts - The '1 pig' also raised a smile around here!!

Is this article in this weeks Stock Journal? ... Funny how the really interesting articles are always when you didn't get it!

Hi Alwaysrovin
If you can get hold of last weeks issue - 13th May,it is on pages 10 and 11. Another interesting thing was the 20 minute crossing. There is a good picture of a vehicle crossing with all the occupants all wearing life vests and standing on the side of the ferry. From the width of the crossing and the size of the very small outboard motors, you can see why it take so long to make the small crossing.

It will be very interesting to see the statistics if it runs this year.

Cheers

Thanks, - missed that issue too! Sadly don't think I'll be able to get hold of a copy - such is life!

Depending on how work goes, thinking of loading up and heading down to have a look when the water gets there; though not so sure of the idea, what with everyone else doing the same! ... But suppose it doesn't happen often! - Please keep the updates coming!
