Hi all,

I am thinking of buying a Codan HF Radio but have noticed that the antenna is very, very tall - almost 2.5 metres!

My question is do I have to travel with it this high? Or can I EASILY unscrew the whip component when I don't need the radio?

And when the whip is connected doesn't it flap around a lot given its height?

Cheers Paul

Hi Paul

Yes the antenna on any HF transceiver is tall but thats the way it has to be for the thing to work. However as a Codan NGT owner/user I can tell you that
1. The antenna does dot flap about at all (the big fibreglass one) when the vehicle is underway. And 2. the whip unscrews fairly easily when you are not using it. I also have a shorter s/s whip when driving in country where overhanging trees etc might damage the bigger whip.

Cheers

John,
Do you notice any performance difference between the fibreglass and stainless steel whip on the 9350? I have the s/steel whip and wondered if it was worth getting the fibreglass whip.

Hi Paul

Yes you can easily unscrew the antenna as it is only needed when the radio is in use. Antennas come in different lengths according to the frequencies you wish to use.Check out www.bushcomm.com.au as they offer a range of antenna which may be more suitable if you are worried about travelling with a long antenna Hope this helps No affliiation with Bushcomm dah da dah

I have mine off most of the time. It will still receive with it off, but I don't even try and transmit. I can often listen into the scheds for HF Radio club, but I'm only 50km from Albany. I did listen to the scheds when I was in Merredin too. I only put the whip on when travelling away and know that I want to transmit back to the base stations.
Cheers

I have a short whip with base loading coil on my Barrett. it is fine for everything above 3 MHz. The big whip goes on for the desert trips. The small whip for the Cape.

Where did you get the small whip from as I have been looking for one for a Barrett 950
Thanks

Even the stainless steel whip doesn't move around much, I leave mine on all the time, (except when about to go into underground car parks). When travelling, the fibreglass whip goes on, and the stainless steel whip gets carried as a spare. And I carry a 6924 in the rear of the car as well.

The 9350 will tune to 8022MHz with just the spring (no whip) but I wouldn't like to transmit with it like that.

Oh, for an edit function...should be 8022 KHz, not MHz...

Hi Paul,

I was just down having our NGT programme updated for our upcoming trip and he showed me Codan's new electronic antenna it is about the same width as the original one but only about 150mm high and then a metal whip screws on that, it works the same as Barrett's antenna with no moving parts.
