Hi all
We are fairly new to this free camping while on holidays in caravan. We were wondering what is the best method of heating in our caravan when we are not connected to the 240v power.

Hi Ron
The safest way is to put on more cloths.
Unflued gas heaters should not be used in enclosed areas
12v heater will flatten the battery quick smart.

It depends a bit what you are prepared to spend Ron. Webasto make a couple of good diesel heaters, one for direct heating and the other for heating water. The link will take you directly to the RV heater page.

In the Karavan we heat water through a heat exchanger recirculating from the water heater, through a storage tank, but I am aware of some others that are using the space heater. They are made for motor homes and bigger caravans.

I know the one we have is a great little product and can be used to keep engine blocks warm in frozen climates, with very low consumption levels.

We actually have a diesel cook top as well and the 10 litre tank lasts more than three weeks for hot water and stove use.

The only draw back of the water heater is that it sounds like a distant jet starting up, when it lights. Little sound comparatively for the cook top. Easy and safe fuel though and no smell inside, though a sooty smell outside at times.

I hate the cold

We have gone for a diesel heater installed with on switch beside the bed so we do not have to get out of bed to turn it on :-)

I hate the cold too. If the temperature is uncomfortably low it's a good time to hook up the "tractor" and go where it isn't so cool.
The reverse cycle air con serves to warm us up until we get there

Hi Ron

If getting a caravan built i would have a webasto or similar built in, with additional outlet into bathroom (ideal clothes drier). However as we choose to go north in winter rather than to the snow it is not something I'd fit now. Wind down the windows, and if the van doesn't get warm enough, put on warm clothing, or dive under the doona. We have a full caravan, not a pop top or windup/slide out (gee the latter can get cold with those beds on wings of thin chipboard). In our present van, we have twice woken to find stiff frost outside (and inside the four seasons vent), but we were warm inside and didn't notice the frost until waking and looking outside.

Last year we got sudden cold weather when we crossed int NSW from sunny Qld, and my husband had bronchitis at the time. I purchased a small fan heater to use when in caravan parks which proved very effective, and even dried all the washing for me when rain set in as soon as i finished washing everything. Soon we went bush again and didn't feel the cold.
