winch/snatch straps

Looking for peoples oppinion concerning some advice i was given recently. I was told that the use of a winch extension strap in an (emergency) is an ecceptable replacement for a snach strap. Is this the done thing within the 4wd community.

I wouldnt be too keen on using a winch extension strap to snatch out for fear of ripping something off with the shock loading.
I have used a winch extension with a snatch strap joined however to get extra length.
I wouldnt hesitate in using a winch extension strap though just for towing and thats why I dont bother carrying drag chain (also saves on weight)

I do agree with all the comments made (i was always taught, use the right tool for the job). This comment was made after talking about snatch straps breaking and using the winch strap in EMERGENCY situations. Also chris makes a good point, joining the broken snatch strap and the winch strap together results in a reasonable alternative.

Winch extension strap has no stretch in it.. For $60 why bother?

agree with truckster the use of a winch extension strap as any other use than what it is designed for would be risky as there is no give in the strap.also if something went wrong & somebody or something was hurt or damaged in correct use of equipment would be classified as negligence leaving you open to prosicution & insurance cliams jmho

If you only want to get one strap, just get a snatch strap instead of the winch strap. Reason being is that you can use it for snatching and in an emergency you can still use it as a tow strap (although it will be useless as a snatch strap after towing with it)

Like everyone else has said.
A winch extension strap has no stretch, so your much more likely just to pull a bull off or twist other expensive bits.
Use it as a tow rope. I.e. take up all the slack before you start pulling.

Which begs me to ask...............
What about using a snatch strap to extend the winch cable or as a subtitue tree trunk protector?
Is the snatch strap a 'one size fits all' (within reason of course)
How much straight pulling (winching, using it around a tree trunk as a trunk protector) will a snatch strap stand before it is no good for snatching?
