Have never given it much thought before, but after just receiving renewal notices for our 17ft caravan, closely followed by SWMBO's Laser, I discovered suprisingly that it is dearer to register the caravan than the Laser. Caravan used (not often enough :-( at the present ) a few weeks a year is $285. Laser used every day is $231. My Triton used most days is $406.
All are $55 registration fee, with the balance called Motor Vehicle Tax, which is calculated according to the vehicle Tare weight ??? I believe ???.
Our Jayco comes in at 1340 Tare and 1610 GVM. Laser is 970 Tare with Triton 1580 Tare and 2770 GVM. Seems to be a steep increase as vehicle weight increases.
I suppose It is only a once a year cost, but something else to consider when shopping for a bigger caravan. How are camper trailers by comparison?
Anyway, no good grumbling, is it, seeing as how all those funds, along with fuel taxes, are going towards maintaining/building our wonderful roads LOL LOL :-))
Think I need a beer.
Cheers All
Fred.

Rego is free for your vehicle for NSW age pensioners Fred.
Still got to pay for the CTP and inspection though.

Only one free rego per pensioner though, so go for the most expensive and pay the other, unless of course the partner is a pensioner as
well.
In that case the vehicles have to be in separate names
Cheers,
Cruiser

Yes, I should have put that in the post about only one vehicle per pensioner.
If the partner is a pensioner then they can have a vehicle in their name too and get the rego free.
But, they can't be in joint names.
One vehicle per pensioner as Cruiser and SDG say.

Fred,
Qld regos are per # of cylinders Mitsu Grandis 4cyl = $655.25 Mitsu Paj 6cyl = $808.40 Caravan due in about 2 months so see what that is then. And they claim we are "The low tax state"

Doesn't QLD have the cheapest fuel & that compensates the high rego fees. In Vic the registration fee isn't to bad but the high TAC Insurance gets you I think I pay $580 for 4 cyl pajero & $38.00 for 2004 Jayco outback.

Registration & 3rd party for my 80 series this year was $831. Ouch.

Yes in the "Smart State" NOT, rego is charged by the number of cylinders in the vehicle
So our Commodore and the Cruiser will both be $831 each.
The van cost $180 in Feb for a 25ft after initial rego in WA was $133
Also cost $90 gas cert and $60 for roadworthy when changing rego over to QLD
A pensioner family gets 1 vehicle at half rego cost so I get about $200 of one of them. Time to buy a 4cyl for the wife I think.

Hmm, I've had a couple already Fred, so I guess your behind the eight ball already.
Anyway you have a valid point.
We have a few trailer and other things that we tow.
$285 Jayco 1280kg, Braked with no inspection
$149 Horse x2 float, dual axle 760kg braked inspection
$54 6x4 box trailer enclosed, work trailer.
There is no Rhyme or reason to it.
I really believe that the RTA has no idea what they are doing.
Hmmm
I cant explain it.

Jon, I think 750 Kg is the defining weight.
Once you get above 750 Kg you gotta dig deeper.
I think my CT was going to be about the same as your Jayco, and my CT is about 980 Kg.
Not sure about if the dual axles comes into the equation though.

When I bought the van in Vic a few years ago it's current rego there had been I think $35 per year.
Brought it
home, and transfer rego to NSW involved compulsory blue slip $50 and just over $1000 (stamp duty + rego fees) to hang NSW plate on it.
Would be interesting to see the RTA's fee structure.
Would be more interesting to see where it all goes.
Fred.

Same here Fred when we bought our Swan that was Qld rego'd.
Just on $1000.00, $39.00 was for a number plate that isn't much thicker than Foil.
Blue slip, $50.00 to the Mechanic, Brakes tested, and now there is no requirement to have to inspected, not that I'm going to ask them why not LOL.
But your right Fred, It would be interesting to have it all broken down and where it goes, Oh thats right it goes to better roads & safety programs.
:P

If its got brakes [750 kg and above] a roadworthy and safety slip is required on TRANSFER of registration , also a current [within the last 3 mths] gas certificate if the trailer -c/van has fixed gas lines / stove /3 way fridge.
