Absolutely! The 1989 4runner was released with a 2.4L 4 cylinder diesel in Australia. Naturally aspirated with a 5 speed manual transmission.

In the US the hilux which was never sold as a hilux was intended more as recreational vehicle. They got V6 motors and 4 doors long before us and higher levels of trim. They also have a V8 Tacoma which has a 4.4 V8 same as landcruiser. The Tacoma is a variant of the hilux we have but wider and taller.
In Australia the hilux was intended oridinally as a work hack for farmers and tradesman and that is why weve always had diesels and dualcabs.
