I am looking for a long camera extension pole like this but I am not keen on paying $700+ for it

http://www.bigano.com/index.php/en/consulting/69-lessons/244-lesson-2-how-to-get-an-original-shot-with-remote-and-aerial-shooting.html

Someone suggested a radio aerial may do the same job.

I am sure I could find a way to fix it to the vehicle when and where it was needed or rig a tripod base somehow for less than the price they are asking.

Most aluminium suppliers stock Telescopic Drawn Tube, in full lengths, you could probably make your own mast.
An example from Action Aluminium is here.

Go to a shop specializing in house paints and look at the variety of telescopic aluminium poles used for paint rollers. They range from super heavy duty to light weight. To adjust the length simply twist the pole at each section. The prices are less than 50 dollars.

Hi D200Dug,

I'm not sure if I should post this so someone let me know if it's inappropriate.

4x4 Equip manufactures a 3m telescopic fibreglass sand flag pole that we've seen also used as a tv antenna mounting and maybe it could also be used for a camera mounting. It has a threaded base and a number of different mounts that suit that thread so it's quite easy to fit to a bullbar or a towbar.

My cameras are a couple of kg each with lenses Would they be ridged enough or would they sway I was looking for about 6 or 7 m high to give me a higher viewpoint.

They are quite rigid, they don't bend around like many of the flags on the market. For 6-7 metres you may be better off with a steel or alloy pole which would handle the weight better though.

If you need more than a few meters then you can get telescopic fibreglass poles with click stops in them every metre , used in electrical saftey.

They collaspe beautifully into 1 m length - very effective

Ours is 30 ft , and think was $250 some years ago.

I already have a really nice heavy monopod

I regularly carry it when I am photographing alone in urban areas at night.

you could sort of describe it as a really heavy extendable baton thing with a camera mount on the end :-)

I also carry it in the bush as it is handy for poking things I do not want to get close to or touch !

Thanks for the offer I basically need a 7 meter monopod !!!!!

I take photos as a living ( it is tough work but someone has to do it :)

They need to be taken on a professional camera so it is not worth bothering about little cameras. Margo has one of those but I doubt she would allow me to tie that to a kite either !!!

Doug.
There is a carbon fibre 9meter telescopic squid pole available, very strong and not too expensive. A mate has one to support his HF antenna. Eric.

I was looking into this some time ago for the same reasons. If you google you will find plenty of DIY ideas.
You will need to fit it to your car, there is a guy that has one rigged up but I can't find the link. You will also have to factor in the wind, the smallest breeze will have a dramatic effect at that height.

Have a look at this...
