Has anyone taken a Suzuki Grand Vitara V6 2.5 Ltr manual across the Simpson desert.

I am in the planning stages for this trip and would like to know how much fuel I should carry.

Ays
Our 2.5l v6 vitara got about 500k's to the tank on the road, drive a it or any loaded up car on the sand in 4x4 and fuel consumptions goes through the roof ( 40-100% worse ). We never liked the suzuki because of the limited range, apart from that it was a competant little car.

With the limited cargo space taken up with camping gear it does not leave a lot of room for spare fuel. I personally do not like the idea of carrying unleaded inside the vehicle, that only leaves the roof racks or a trailer for the jerry cans unless you have a another car in convoy to carry your fuel.

PS There is nothing wrong with carrying jerry cans inside your vehicle....unless you are a smoker of course !!!!!
I carry 120litres in jerries in the back of my truck when I go on an extended trip. Saves a few dollars on fuel purchases.

Don't know for sure but have heard of Landcruiers/Nissan patrol diesels using 100 to 150 litres and Rangerovers (petrol) using similar amounts. We would not take our Freelander due to the small size of tank and vehicle (nowhere to store 100 plus litres of petrol safely).

Will be using our Troopy next year on the Simpson (tanks hold 180 liters diesel)

Thanks for the advice guys, but I really need to get the gen about my specific vehicle as I have noticed that as soon as I select 4H or 4L my consumption goes through the roof. I don't want to be the silly bastard who runs out of fuel and has to be towed the rest of the way. I might ring the Pink road House at Oodnadatta as they would see every concievable type of vehicle go through there.
