Mt Augustus to Paraburdoo With Caravan

Hi Guys,
After the national gathering we are heading out to Mt Augustus with our friends who are towing a Coromal Pop Top. From here we were going to take the Dooley Downs Road through to Karijini via Ashburton Downs Rd. Could any body give us an update on this section. Our van is an off roader but theirs is not and its this section between Augustus and Paraburdoo that we are uncertain with.
Thanks

Over the Easter period the road was excellent. Some road works as you come into Mt Augustus created very deep bull dust. The Pingandy Dooley Downs Rd was the bit we travelled and as long as you read the signs and watch your speed you'll be fine. Some nice country through there. Ashburton Downs Stn no longer welcomes visitors, so the sign says.

Thanks Duncan,
I saw your report from Easter but would our friends caravan be ok on the Dooley Downs Road. From what I have read the first 100kms is the rough section and not sure how their van will go. Did you take a caravan.
Thanks Brian and Julie

Morning Brian & Julie, no I/we weren't towing and we didn't enter the road from the start in the North but joined the track between the Ashburton and Mt Augustus and the section we travelled was excellent and would have been good for any sort of van. Last year in July I travelled the Ashburton Downs Rd and it was also an excellent 100km safe travelling track for a vehicle and would have been safe for towing 70-80km/hr. Maybe give the Mt Augustus camping area a call or Ashburton Downs Stn for latest conditions.

When I was out there a couple of years ago, a couple were pulling a relatively old tandem axle van (on road) which was about 22 foot. They were pulling it with a 100 series. We met them at the Kennedy Ranges and after we got to Mt Augustus they turned up there a few days later. They were obviously taking it very easy and seemed to be having no troubles at all. They didn't stay at Mt Augustus, they kept going through on the Dooley Downs Road. As far as I can ascertain, they did it without incident. Conversely, a young fella in a work vehicle pulling a tandem axle trailer came into the station with two wheels only on the trailer. He blew the other two tyres on the trailer plus a spare coming in from Meekatharra. I didn't wonder why when I saw him driving into the park - like a bull at a gate. The moral as you always hear on this forum - slow and steady is the key. I think your friends will get through as long as you are all prepared to take it nice and steady.

Thanks Cheeky
We will go and see what it is like, sound ok to us and we are not tearing along.
Actually we will be coming into Mt Augustus from Paraburdoo so will also talk to people in Karinjini. Thought we had another two weeks after National and wanted to go up further then cut back down.
cheers Julie and Brian
