Hi all,

This may be a crazy question, but I'll ask anyway.

I typically only go 4wding with another 4WD, so my list of recovery equipment is minimal (Treads,Snatch Strap, Bull Bag,Compressor,Shovel).

I'm planning a couple of solo trips so I'll nead to add a winch to my kit. So far all the times I have been stuck, I have been recovered from the rear of the vehicle. If I was solo on these occasions a front bullbar winch would not have helped.

Here comes the crazy question;
Is there anyway a bullbar mounted electric winch can be set up somehow to pull you backwards ?? (use of pulleys or something)

Thanks
Phil P

Not a problem winching backwards with older 4bies. Just run the cable under the truck and winch slowly. If there is a handy tree you can winch sideways and get yourself out that way. Another idea is to buy a lightweight winch(3000lb) and fit it to your rear bumper. I have winched my trucks in all directions with a front mounted winch. You can of course take a set of rope pulleys with you...it is a clumsy way to winch but it will get you out of strife.

Best thing however, is to be careful when you are going solo, and not get in to a silly predicament.
Cheers,

Depending on your truck, you can mount one on the rear..

Other than that, modify the fairlead roller so that the cable can go under the car without fubaring it. Then winch backwards

Gday Phil
Turfor in the back is what you need. First time will be the last if you get stuck, but hey, you are self sufficient and able to safely pull at any angle.
There are also winch cradles available that you sling to the bar and pull, but you will probably brake your back getting it out the back.
Think about the picture above and then imagine how you would look after threading the wire back through to the rear :-)

Mr P,

Before you get into a"sticky" situation run a strong rope under your vehicle from winch to tow bar and pull it tight and tie off. That way you can pull your winch cable through to the rear easily. When winching, run the cable through a shackle attatched to your tow bar so you get the pull from the centre of the rear of your vehicle and the vehicle doesn't slew sideways.

her's one i bet you guys nevers heard of
how about a land lock?
it's my dad taught me that really works
the deal is you can get through the mud hole when thers is nothing to hook your winch onto. ok read closely

first you need a good shovel
then a good bar or pipe or chunk of wood
and most importatly a winch

the next thing you need to do is dig a trench on solid ground. if you can not find solid ground this will still work

dig a trench about two meters long tapering the depth, the shallow end closest to the vehicle and about two to three feet deep at the deepest end. if you are in mud go deeper. next dig another trench about one meter wide to form the cross of a "T" the same depth as the deepest part of the tapered trench. next lay a big chunk of wood or a metal bar or something in the top part of the trench (cross of the T). hook the winch cable on the bar/wood/whatever, then to the vehicle and pull a way.
this may take some effort but when you are alone it won't take long!!

usaly a 6 foot long by 3 foot at the top of the "T" will get the job done you have use your own judgement by at least 3 feet deep
