Can anyone please confirm that this is true for the Gunshot Creek crossing on the OTL up on Cape York.

Whilst we are used to steep tracks and washouts in the Vic High Hills we are really not keen on going down the "chute" at Gunshot Creek crossing on the OTL.

Don't want to damage the car unnecessarily.

Nothing newer than March 2010. Even then it does not show anything about Gunshot.

Already been there.

No I am not a member there.

I would have expected the "latest info" thread to contain the latest. HAH It did - For 2009.

Looks like its not kept up to date.

Thats the problem with the internet. Lots of data without the data being updated. I think we will just wait until we get there.

I have found this about forums before. I do undertsand you cannot keep road conditions up to date as they depend on weather and grading. But this is a bit different.

Cheers

We didnt do Gunshot but the Ranger and one other car we saw on the OTL said the Gunshot was "impossible" and yes, there was a way around it

At any one time there will be 5 yes 5 ways in - out of the infamous gunshot , if you believed everything about gunshot you would be a candidate to buy the Sydney harbour bridge , there are 2-3 crossings / dropoffs a lot worse than gunshot , Gunshot just sounds and looks tough on video. The 1st dropdown heading north on the OTL after a burger at Bramwell Junction was in Aug 08 harder than any part of "Gunshot" .

The rely on reports from others who have been the way we want to go.

I have asked the poster to confirm his comment. I don't think he will but its a long way to miss out or get trapped on a rumour. So I try to confirm it first.

I cannot see why any of the chicken tracks would be closed either. Does not make sense.

Thanks

Alloy

it just so happened that Telstra buldozed gunshot this one year. Normally gunshot is indeed the worst.
Mind you the one you are referring to, Plam Creek, is also quite good.

But don't let the 2008 conditions fool you. It certainly did not last, as when we were there in 2009 it was bad agian.

vk1dx,
Go to Gunshot, watch all the excitement then, just go the long way round to the other side.

Oh "don't you worry about that" we are going there.

If its the only way then we will go down the chute but I would prefer not to risk damaging anything.

Due there on the 10th or 11th Aug.

you can always go to gunshot and look for yourself. if the "chicken track" is too rough for you its only a 10 km backtrack to do the detour thru heathlands.
in 99 we used the detour after recovering a few others who attempedthe big drops ,in 2008 we used the telstra track and could have towed the camper thru with a mini minor.
some mates(again towing) played in the chute in 2009 ( and needed a recovery)but some of their group used the telstra chicken track no probs.
conditions change and everyone has a different perception of whats doable, go and make your own decision
cheers

Phil, we came through there several days ago. Took the long way round and approached Gunshot from the north.

The original chute looks as bad as ever, possibly worse. Cannot see how any vehicle could traverse it without being winched down and another winch to pull the nose out from almost vertical at the mudhole.

The several chicken track alternatives were all full of washouts and even more dangerous than the original chute.

Did see a group of motorcyclists use one of the chicken tracks with difficulty but they have the advantage of only two wheels in line.

Would have been fascinated to witness a vehicle attempt but would also be concerned that I would have to render serious first aid.

Having said all that, someone will go and do it. If it's you, be sure to have video coverage and post it on here.

Cheers from idyllic Cape York. Leaving the Top tomorrow.

Cheers
Allan

Thanks all. And as usual we got a mixture of yes there are chicken tracks and no there aren't any.

I guess we will find out ourselves on about the 10th or 11th of August. At least all cars have winches, lockers and all the good lifts and tyres.

Thanks again

Phil - the main 'chicken track' is about a 20km run through the Heathlands. While it will take you a little longer (mabye!!) this is quite a scenic drive and you come back to the OTL just to the North of Gunshot. Not a bad campsite on the north bank provided people have cleaned up after themselves - last time I was there in 2007 it took me about 2 hours to clean up empty beer cans, dirty nappies, human excrement etc etc. Stayed around for a few hours the next day to burn what could be burnt and then carried the rest with me to the Jardine servo for disposal.

Yes You can see that on the map but its not what we were talking about. I guess we shall have to just wait until we get there. I have been told there are still a few but quite rough and rutted.

Thanks

Last year we took the eastern approx 20km bi-pass round Gunshot, drove back into see it it in action.
Three young blokes did it and all suffered various panel damage to their trucks including ripping out the rear tail lights. a day later we heard someone went down and got stuck, his mate then went down the adjacent shoot and also got stuck. They nearly spent a day getting themselves out of the mess (they had to wait for another vehicle's winch). We did it in August and liked our trucks too much to risk damage. Another one to watch out for is Nolans Brook (the last crossing before the Jardine). In August last year it was up to the door handles of my Patrol and at that time had claimed 26 vehicles (as at Bramwell Junction Road House about its condition). Again I 'chickened' out, as my truck is too expensive to be replaced.
All other crossings were great, some very rutted and challenging, but well worth it (walk them first to see where the deep holes are).
Hope all goes well.
Cheers
Chris
