2 months ago we bought a 4 year old 21ft jayco sterling and are on our test run with it at the moment. We have had no problems yet at caravan parks but when it comes to
free camping we found that the battery (95ahr) may only last for a couple of hours lights only, fridge on gas. we have been driving for about 5hrs at a time with the fridge on dc would that drain the battery? my patrol is wired to charge the house battery although not through an anderson plug. do you think the battery might be dead as i can get it replaced through warranty but means a trip back through
Coffs harbour

I would say that your fridge is causing too much voltage drop in the wiring so that there is not enough voltage to charge the battery.

Get an Anderson plug fitted ASAP. After driving for a while, check the temp of the wiring plug at the tow point. If it is warm, there is definately a problem with the current being drawn through it.

thanks ianw
but if the battery has been on charge for 24hrs prior to me driving for 5hrs there should be enough power in the battery to run the fridge?

Hi Tricky
If you have a Electrolux fridge they draw 14.5amps on 12volt, which is about 5to 6 hrs run time. To charge through your car you would need minimun 6mm cable. Better with anderson plug and use 8 or 10 mm cable. If you are only using less than 6mm you will not get enough charge into battery while travelling
Cheers

You say that your Patrol is wired to charge the battery. Is the van wired to charge the battery through the same pin on the connector? Is the voltage on the van battery above 14v when the fridge is on and the Patrol engine is going? If it is not , then your fridge is draining your battery while you are driving!

You also say that the battery has been on charge for 24Hrs. What is the capacity of the charger? Is it large enough to charge the battery in just 24hours?

Hate to hog the thread, but another point - is the battery the same one that was in the van when you bought it? When I bought my van the battery was stuffed because someone had turned on the fridge to 12v and left it on.

Hi Dick,
I would take it back and have it replaced under the warranty if you have that option. It is likely that it is dead after 4 years.
If you have charged the battery on 240v for a day or two before setting out, then it should run lights for a number of evenings when you are unpowered. We had this set up in our previous van and used it for at least 5 days to run lights.
Cheers Heather

forgot to add that you should get your wiring on the tow vehicle checked as
well and make sure all is working. You may need heavier wiring.
We used to run the fridge on 12 v when in transit and wondered why it didn't stay as cold as on gas or 240v power- we needed heavier wiring.
In our present van we now also run a direct heavy wire through to the fridge. it is just as efficient now on 12v when travelling as on the other power sources.
cheers,
Heather

thanks to all for your replies once again all very helpful. the fridge is a Domectic 186 lt so i think it might be drawing more power than my setup is suppling. I have power from the car but i might have to change to 10ml anderson plug. At the moment i am at
Roma and the battery has been on charge for 24hrs vis a Setec ST20-11? which was supplied with the van so would hope is large enough for the job. I might pull the battery out and have it tested here before i head to Coffs and make a goose of myself if its me doing the wrong thing, if not i'll get the new battery
thanks Dick

hi all
i pulled the battery out today and had it tested at 2 auto elec's both said it was dead only reading 8volts after 24hrs chargeing. So off to Coffs for a new battery next week.
thanks

Even run down too many times eh Mainey? Insufficient level of charge, too great a discharge without protection for the battery? Perhaps a pair of batteries will help rather than one battery, but make sure your alternator will cope with it and a decent monitoring system.

hi Mainey
they said it was the battery but they never got to test the charging system that will get tested when we get the van to
Coffs Harbour under warranty i hope. Might look at extra battery later

Hi Tricky, I solved the problem by freezing 2 x 2 litre plastic milk bottles full of
water which are always stored in the freezer of my fridge.....so I drive all day with the fridge off ( the frozen bottles keep the temperature down) and so all the charge voltage goes to my battery, when I stop and
camp I use only gas to run the fridge and it all works just fine and it all keeps nice and cold.
I never use 12 VDC to run my fridge, however at caravan parks I use 240 volt only to run the fridge.
I have a separate fridge and freezer in the tug, 2 x weaco's....a 60 and a 50 L)
I have 2x80 watt solar panels for the van to keep my van batteries charged when I am camped and a Honda 20 for back up and heavy use for example, the bread maker.
So you can tell that I only use my van batteries for lighting and entertainment.
It works for me.

thanks for info
will try that on next trip. I had planned to use the battery just for the lights I was hoping that the car would charge the battery and run the fridge at the same time looks like some modification's later
