Good evening everyone

I noticed oil on the driveway late this afternoon and thought it may be coming from the oil filter, but alas it appears to be comming from the bell housing and it is engine oil.

I last changed the oil just under 5000k's ago.

Is this a big problem or something simple ( I hope)? The troopy is a 75 series, 1995.

Maybe the rear main seal, pretty common on all cars really. I had mine done about a year ago and it cost me $800 but also did the thrust bearing at same time. Mine was only a very slight weep but as i was selling it to a mate i wanted it fixed.

Sounds like a rear engine seal. Not a problem in real life, but could be a hassle with your annual check. Every car will eventually leak oil from the rear seal. It is not going to affect the reliability or operation of your vehicle. The fix requires the removal of the engine from the vehicle, so unless you are forced to by an over zealous annual checker, don't worry too much !

Hi Ian & Boo Boo
Removal of engine... that's a little extreme.
Just the gearbox has to come out, clutch & flywheel off & theres the seal. Probably pay to replace the clutch while its all out ....dont forget to machine the flywheel.
As mentioned rear seals do weep for a fair time before they become a problem. As long as its not pouring out, making a real mess, your not going on any long hard trips you should be able to put it off for a while.

If its a 1HZ, its quicker to remove the engine than the gearbox if you have a o/head gantry or engine crane.
Well, I can do it quicker, last one was an hour and engiine was swinging in the breeze.

Hi Boo Boo. I'm guessing the engine is a diesel and as the other replies have stated it could be from the rear main seal. I would check as much as you possibly can with a light and a mirror from the top of the engine and down the back. I have seen tappet cover gaskets, headgaskets and side cover gaskets all leak and the oil always collects down the bottom so try to make sure where the oil is coming from before commiting to major repairs. Regards,Bob.
