We use to do quite a bit of snow camping up in the high country of Victoria back in the 70’s and 80’s. There was one particularly heavy fall season which happened to coincide with one of the very few times I didn’t own a 4WD.

We’d often camped in the area West of Matlock during the winter and enjoyed the solitude.

During this particular trip we had a manual Commodore station wagon, and a set of chains. This was the only short period in my life that I didn’t own a 4WD.

The area up there was a winter wonderland, and after a lot of sliding around we arrived at a track to left. The camp was set up about 500m in the bush and we had a good night around the fire underneath a tarp.

After packing up the next morning to head down to Woods Point, we drove back along the track to the road. On arriving there, I came across a one metre high barrier of compacted snow. Yes you guessed it; the grader had come through early in the morning.

Now I’d have to say the ex missus wasn’t all that happy, after we spent nearly two hours in the cold clearing the snow with our hands, to get the car back on to road.

LOL
