In the process of planning a little trip west at the end of August and got to wandering about coming home via the Burke Dev Rd rather than the Gulf rd.
Idea being to spend last night/s at
Chillagoe /Mungana which is a spot we enjoy.
Question is: is it worth it? is there anything worth seeing? or is it just a long dusty road.
Camps? there's any amount of rivers are there any nice spots to pull up for the night.
Staaten River NP Looks like it's completely locked up, is this correct?
Worth mentioning is that we travel totally self sufficiently so a bit of isolation is welcome. we also prefer
bush camps.
Haven't managed to find anything useful on the area so any info is most welcome. Thanks in advance.

Been thinking of going that way myself at times.
It has to be worth the drive if you have not been over it before.
There must be something to see around the Gilbert crossing.
Could be some
camping around there as
well.
Where the Lynd runs into the Mitchel used to be a popular
camping spot but I hear the last floods made the access to the sandbank a bit difficult.
There used to be a Gulf Savannah Tourism Office in
Cairns. If they are still around they will have a bit of info on that road.
Some years back there were a couple of stations running small tourist operations but they may have closed.

Fatso - Been some tine since I have been all the way through here - Fences are/used to be a problem around the rivers
Normanton side. Chillago side there are some great spots on the river - Ring up the Station owners prior to
camping and they may help with a spot

Thanks for that info. I'll have to get going on the phone calls.
Raises an interesting point though which I'll put into a new thread.
