Hi guys,

Progressing from the esky with dry ice as a freezer, and second esky with ice blocks as the fridge, to a 12 V job..

Out of interest, it will be an Engel 40l. Our general use will be for three days at a time, but are off to Fraser at Christmas for two weeks. We are a family of five, and will need cold cans of the evening - obviously the Engel won't cut it by itself - I'll still need to take one, if not two other traditional eskies as well..

Questions:

How best do I use the Engel??

1. As a fridge, and take an esky with dry ice for frozen goods?

2. As a freezer, and freezing ice blocks to keep a fridge going?

3. As a combo fridge/freezer - I heard of a dude who put a piece of five ply between frozen goods on the bottom, and fridge stuff on top... Will this work? In an Engel? (ie does it only have the cooling element at the bottom?)

Lastly, I have heard that a mixture of 5% metho to 95% water is good stuff as an iceblock (just don't want the kids to drink it!!)

Finally (like after Lastly ;-), any other tricks for a new 'fridger'

Thanks guys

Ivan

we keep the cray, ice cream, bread and meat frozen, together with two 2 litre plastic milk containers which we cycle between the esky to keep drinks cold.

Fresh vegies (tinned for the last few days if required) is what we take.

2nd battery should be considered a must here if your running at -20CWow! am I cute

Any bloke who has a mate who is a cray fisherman and brags about it is a mongrel. You'd sell ice to Quinn the Eskimo wouldn't you.ne cede malis

Islanders
Engel have just brought out a fridge/freezer combination. I don't know much about it, as I have an EvaKool RF40 combo fridge freezer.
I reckon the combo is the way to go. On a recent 4 week trip to Cobourg Peninsula it performed very well- we even brought home some of our frozen meals that we prepared before we left! (No, we weren't eating fish all the time, we just overcatered!)
Good luck at Fraser

If you need a Freezer then I would be using the Engel as such and using your esky as the "fridge" .

You can always freeze a milk bottle or two and transfer over . . .

Dry Ice is good stuff and will certainly keep things frozen . . . . but its far from foolproof , so a "proper" freezer would be the go.

Here's part two to the question then - is it worth the dough to buy a fridge slide ($275), or do I settle just for a mount ($100), or.. if I wedge her in and a tie down she'll be right??

Thanks guys
