4WD Direct - experiences?

Hi all
98 Jackaroo needs new shocks, but don't want to overcapitalize so-to-speak so I'm thinking of getting Lovell's (3yr/70K warranty) thru 4WD Direct (online QLD). Seems to be best price around ($439 free delivery).

Anyone had good/bad experiences with the company or want to suggest alternative shocks/supplier? Seems a large range available but most of the alternative mid-range shocks (OME, Munroe, Ironman) are ~$150 a pop.
Thanks.

I have always had good results from lovells products but I must say I am super impressed with the magums on the Jack(as I was also on my 4runner). Took it over broken tar with pot holes at 110 and the front end control was superb(now I can notice the back end moving arround) then found some mild corrugations and again I was very impressed. Glad I paid the extra $100 over the cheaper shocks out their, wish I had done the same with swmbo s Nullarbor, will have to redo them buggar.
let us know what you fit.
Cheers Pete

A bit indirect, but as a fellow Jack owner, I notice Ultima shocks on Ebay for
Jacks for about $280 delivered. Now I have recently put these on my sprayrig
Hilux & have found them to be excellent so far. Chinese..? probably, but appear
well made, larger than originals & came with all bushes. That was for 4....oldbaz.

Came with a 3 year/100000 klm warranty
Gotta be happy with that.

I have dealt with him a few times, if you buy goods of him on Ebay and pay via Paypal he charges you more. And i recently did a deal with him for some lights, we agreed at $400 delivered. I got lights and he had charged me $428. What the hell so i contacted him, he reckons because i was paying by credit card i had to pay for postal insurance, and a credit card surcharge of 2%. dodgy bastard if you ask me, we agreed on a deal and he still ripped me off. His feedback on Ebay is full of complaints like that. Adding $10 after sale finished and stuff.

In seeking opinions, you haven't mentioned the type of work the shocks will be doing - seal, gravel, corrugations, rock crawling ? It matters.

Good point. I'm after a middle-of-the-road shock, don't do much hardcore 4WDing these days and little towing (yet). I've read numerous reviews/comments about shocks and given the age of my truck have concluded that a good mid-range shock will suffice. So, I'm happy to get gas/oil in lieu of the heavier duty foam cell.
Cheers

I believe SuspensionStuff use Lovells for their own brand shocks. Their set for your Jackaroo is $440 inc postage. I've dealt with them for a few products previously and have been extremely happy with the service and speed of delivery. Link is here.

For another well priced option, you could try Terrain Tamer shocks. I'm currently using them in my 80 series and am happy- they are firm and control the car well. The ones for my car were around $120 each. Link here.

It will help if you give a bit more info though, like your intended application and how much stuff you carry and how frequently!

Thanks for the pointers Amy. The SuspensionStuff shocks look very much like the Ultima's mentioned by OldBaz, albeit at a much higher price. Terrain Tamer does have a similar shape to the Lovells but boy are they light on details on the website. Might email them for more info tho given the comment by Muntoo above.

Hrmmm, I know that on the 80series board the guy from Suspension Stuff said they had Dobinsons springs and Lovells shocks as their own brand... maybe only for the Landcruiser ones, I don't know.

Terrain Tamer shocks are made by Cofap in Brazil and come with a 3 year/100,000km warranty. Agreed about the website- best to call or go into the shop!

g'day Bazooka,
I rang the blokes at 4wd direct the other day after speaking to a few suspension salesmen who just tried to flog their product as the best, the bloke i spoke to at 4wd direct was happy to sell me any shock i wanted ,but he asked a lot of questions to make sure he wasn't about to sell me the wrong set up, i found them very helpful to talk to, also another bloke who helped with info was the owner of Zordos suspension near Brisbane, he has a website just called Zordos suspension ,he was helpful also.
Cheers, hope this helps.
John.

Hi John - yes I've seen Zordo on other off-road websites. Seems a no-nonsense and knowledgeable chap so I think I'll give him a try.
