Hi all,

We will be going to Lawn Hill in a couple of weeks and then on to Karumba.

Has anybody had recent experience on the road from Gregory Downs to Burketown and from there to Normanton and if so, do you think we could reasonably take road vans across those two roads.

I know that we can go to Burke & Wills roadhouse and up but are coming back that way to Cloncurry and want to try a different road.

G'day Don, we were through there a couple of weeks ago & you will have no problem with those roads. While most of Gregory to Burketown is gravel it is in good condition. To Normanton from Burketown is sealed. You can take vans to
Adels Grove or Lawn Hill too despite what you may be told elsewhere. The road is good with a couple of minor creek crossings that require the usual care.
Enjoy the trip....oldbaz.

Hi "Lads" ....
The road from Gregory to Burky is fine, some roadworks in progress but no bad roads, watch for road trains as work is in progress at "Gregory Crossing" (Tirrana) ......
The road from Burky to Normanton is best taken via "short-cut" or at least more to see ....
From Burky go south/East, sealed road, and you will come across Leichardt river crossing and falls, nice spot to stop and look at and a bit further on, about 70klms from Burky, turn left on to a GRAVEL road ... sorry cant remember the name but is well signposted and that will take you past a Burke & Wills camp site (site is 2klms in from the gravel road and VERY rough, NO c/vans..) and on to Normanton, the shortcut road is ALL gravel but suitable for caravans (good ones as there are 2 van wrecks on the roadside) ....

We caravanned thru in 2009 and agree with what Joe n Mel posted: except for the "Burke & Wills camp site (site is 2klms in from the gravel road and VERY rough, NO c/vans..) " and while yes the 2km in is just a track on black clay it's no real problem for a van if taken steady AND you have a bit of clearance, at least it wasn't in 2009 on our way back down from the Cape, we took our van in no problems, just a couple of wash away areas to negoitiate thru where you may scrape the black clay if you don't have a bit of clearance. ENJOY

Thanks Graham & Anne, we went in there a few weeks ago and it has been a big wet here this year so those wash outs may have washed out a bit more now, just be careful with ya vans :-)

Don,

From the Managers at Doomadgee Roadhouse as posted yesterday on LCOOL -

"If travelling from Burketown, Gregory, Lawn Hill along the Savannah Way to Borroloola PLEASE feel free to ring us for road condition up-dates, the "official" road reports are NOT stating that the CALVERT river is still causing problems for some 4WD's and some have had damage caused by some dirty big rocks in the water and under bits not blending to well....... 95% have to go via "Calvert Road" to the "Tablelands Hwy" bout 560klms btwn fuel stops ....."

HTH

Cheers Kev

Thanks all and it appears that we can travel on that road with road vans.

We have two vans, both Jayco Sterlings and I have driven mine before on dirt..., Yunta to Arkaroola which was a lot rougher than I had been led to believe, luck of the draw I guess, but no real problems with the van except dust ingress. We can tolerate reasonably smooth gravel/dirt roads and even a some corrugations, just have to take it easy, but don't want to spend too long on such roads.

I'll report in when we have done the trek...new post I guess.
