I have heard a rumour that the ferry on the
Birdsville track may be closed in the near future because of rising
water.
We will be in that region in about 2 weeks time and would like to know if there is any substance to the rumour. Who would be the best people to contact if there is a likelihood of this occurring?

Hi Chris
When we were there on the June Long weekend, the ferry operators said Yes that the peak will be expected to rise
well over another metre than the current
water levels. At no stage did they say that this would close the ferry. The flow of
water was quite fast and the ferry handled these conditions with no problems at all. The only thing that was going to be done was the re tensioning of the cables, as in the very short time that the ferry had been in operation and the time we used it, (only 4 days) the
water levels had risen enough for the cables to make the ferry not track correctly.
If you have any major concerns, ring Transport SA, Northern and Outback Region in
Port Augusta, who are in charge on the ferry running. Their direct contact number is 08 - 8648 5231
We were so impressed with all the
water that I have cancelled my WA deserts trip in August and are heading back up that way again, as no one knows then that
water will be there again in future years.
Cheers and have a great trip.
Stephen

Thanks StephenL, it isn't that long to wait now anyway. a few weeks time and we will start to get things ready to go. Our big problem at the moment is getting information for a permit for
Googs track. I finished up having to ring some poor guy whose number is for emergecies. He was good though but still no definite guide so will have to wing when we get over there.
Cheers

Hi Deanna
The permit for
Googs Track are no problems at all. You only have to pay a token fee (From memory was only about $2 when we did it) and are available on your day of travel from shops in
Ceduna. There is good
camping at Googs Lake and
well worth a night there. After that, there are very few
places north for at least 3 hours travel, then you are back into small locations that make good spots for a
camp. Mt Finke also has some good spots for
camping as
well.
Have a great trip
Regards
Stephen
