Got three friends with them.

One an Auto and he has a 21 foot van fairly heavy. He gets around 18 Litres/100ks
One other sold his because he thought his manual should get better than about 17/100
Another one still has his but complains regularly about getting around 16/100 towing his 2 tonne 5th wheeler.

Hi jcm68,
i have a Nissan Nivara st 2.5 turbo 6 speed manual New from December 09, havn't yet towed my lotus van, but around town i average 12lts per 100klm,thats loaded not quite to the max, BUT it knocks spots of my Holden rodeo 3lt Auto.
best thing i done was to buy the Nissan

don't think you will be disappointed if you did buy it

I too am considering a D40. Form my research, i.e. reading Nissan forums etc, the poor fuel consumption relation the Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) on the automatics. My understanding is, the autos require a burn process to clean the accrued particulates out of the filter by dumping diesel into the filter and burning it. This raises the temperature enough to burn off the soot...for want of another word. This process uses...diesel so up goes consumption...a little. If you the burn is not done it affects the vehicles running and performance and I read somewhere it can cause significant damage.

I don't know the details but evidently process is described in the owners manual. You can assist this process by driving at greater than 80kph for about 20 minutes. Please check the manual.

You could of course remove the DPF or gut it, for racing purposes only ;). It is much like a catalytic converter. There is a replacement dummy DPF from the D40...Google it...comes with a certain brand of chip.

This issue seems to only relate to the automatics. The manual D40s do not have a DPF.

I suggest you visit the aforementioned Navara forum and Google "DPF Delete Racing Pipe".

Not quite true as manual Pathfinders are knowne for better fuel economy, the Pathfinder is not even close to a D40 in terms of gearing etc.

Hi John,

We have a D40 Auto diesel with a canopy and regularly tow an Outback Jayco which weighs just under two and a half tonne. We also carry a tinnie on top and all the associated boating/fishing gear in the back for much of the time we are travelling.

When driving into a head wind we do about 23 litres per 100kms, with a tail wind the best we have done is between 16 to 17 litres per 100kms - across the Nullarbor. When not towing we get around 11litres per 100kms.
It tows well enough but because of the 80 litre fuel tank, we regularly carry an extra 20 or 40 litres of diesel in the back in case we have strong head winds.

We have owned it for the last 21 months and driven it 50,000 kms in that time - just had its 90,000km service.

It tows well enough and is a versatile vehicle, comfortable to travel in (rear seats are cramped for adults but we rarely carry passengers) and able to carry boat motor, fuel, generator and fuel, extra diesel etc in the back, so suits us well.

Cheers,
Heather

I have a 2008 D40 auto 2.5 stx. It is fitted with an ARB canopy, ORS storage system in the tub complete with 2 x 105AH aux batteries, 70ltr stainless steel water tank, two very large drawers, fridge and slide and all the gear. Additionally it has a 160ltr opposite lock long range fuel tank, a full set of roof racks with supporting steel bars through the canopy, steel bull bar, XD9000 Warn winch, full set of 3mm underbody steel bash plates, and a Nissan HD towing kit. Also have an ARB rear air locker and a compressor mounted under the seat.
I did a 20000km trip across Aus via the Nullarbor to Perth, then back east via Steep Point, Exmouth, Punmu, Gary, Gunbarrel, Heather Highways, GCR and across the Simpson.....fully loaded with all the necessary camping gear and supplies.....average fuel consumption for this trip was 14.4 ltrs/100km. Running around town I average around 13.2 ltrs/100km, highway running 12.2 ltrs/100km and when towing my Kangacampertrailer on the black top 15.5 ltrs/100km and off road around 16-17 ltrs/100km.

While I would, like most people, really like to get 10 or less ltrs/100km all the time, I'm a realist and know this ain't possible especially when loaded up and towing. I'm happy with the fuel consumption I get and more that happy with the grunt produced by this car, its comfort and reliability.

We have just completed our training run to Ballina and averaged 18litres per 100km towing a 3000kg 5th wheeler behind a 2006 STX 2.5 ,mainly freeways.BUT I took it in for the 100,000 service and all OK except for Timing chain replacement $4000....... Shock.... Horror . I guess better in town than out at Innaminka.

Hi Guys

Nothing to do with Fuel, but we are looking at buying the D40 STX for our trip, but was wondering if anyone has taken kids with them and what they thought of the comfort level in the rear.

Thanks

if you want good fuel economy dont buy one
if you want good off road ability dont buy one
if you want good lookin car buy one
but buy manual only. then spend 10000 on accesories to make it safe and reliable off road.
i had one for 12 months had a bad run traded it on land cruiser 4.5 v8 yes expensive vehicle I agree.
i average 11.8/100kms unloaded. most fuel ever used 13.6/100km,s (simpson crossing) best fuel 9.9/100kms around town. no heavy trailer towing yet.

The V8 may soon blow the Hilux diff in the front on any serious off road. So you might as well have got the Navara with a basic lift kit (which the V8 requires anyway). Want good fuel economy: Buy the Navara or similar. Want good looks: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder;-) Want to tow the heavy vans then the Cruiser may be the go or even better the Grand Cherokee. Always remember that some drivers just have the ability to wreck anything they touch unless it is built like a Chamberlain tractor. Want real offroad ability then it is the Wrangler or Defender.

Another Urban Myth

The Hilux and the cruiser diffs are NOT the same.

This was extensively covered in 4wd Monthly a year or so ago and proved to be incorrect.

Yeah I would have missed that article, if it is correct, as I no longer subscribe to that great magazine (great if you are into heavy mods or have the complex where one needs to be bigger & better than anyone else. As I have my much tricked up diesel Rocsta & gasoline Wrangler, I don't need that anymore, but I do miss Rothy's cooking DVD's and trecks) I now happily subscribe to Caravan World amongst others.

Hi jcm

I have a 2009 STX dual cab D40 Navara diesel I average about 10L/100km. I have towed with it but not enough to get a average fuel consumption.
I did all this before i bought mine, some people give positive feedback others give negative, but at the end of the day its your decision. I have had no problems with mine, been very happy with it. I looked at all the dual cab utes compared prices specifications, and at the end of the day the navara was the one i chose because it suited my needs.

http://public.fotki.com/RockyOne/nissan-navara-dual-/ Sorry Pete but I could not resist having as little lash at your magic Navara home & desert pix. Trust you guys will forgive me. I have them posted on a new Navara site I did at Fotki. Of course, if you jump up and down too much, I can pull them off the site. You guys set the rig up well and seem to know what you are doing out there. I like the ARB canopy except I need a slider on the driver side for our dog mate, 'Spanner' who only rides in the pickup bed on very odd occasions. Seems like on my fuel milage post I missed a dot at the end. Oh! The power of the dot;-)

When stock my MANUAL D40 got under 10L/100K, now is on about 12-13L/100K around the city, but thats on 33" muddies, 2 tanks, bars, winch etc etc.

gets 11-1200K's out of the 2 tanks (145L) 1100 in the city im sure of.

No chip, 3" exhaust though.

They do have some issues, but they are VERY capabl 4x4, mine owes me same as my business partners stock SR5 4X4 and is off its head now for same cash, plus leather and all the mod cons....
