I'm after a set of cheap all terrains for my daughter's Hilux.
Can anyone help with brands and places to purchase, Melbourne, SE Melbourne & South Gippsland.
Best price I've achieved is Triangle, $135, fitted, balanced from Cirelli in Seaford.
Currently has 255/70/15. Could go to 31's

hi john
tyres that survive ok on a trailer where they are just rolling along
may not stand up to the thrust type stresses that come from a 4wd with accellerating and braking and offroad useage and general driving thats a different scenario of forces
that just my thoughts for what it's worth

Why do people do it!! Whats more important the bank balance or the grip with the road.

hi mr biitchi
neither will i
i was offered a replacement set of goodyear tyres after i made a warranty claim as the originals all seperated from the casings at 20,000km
i refused to except the replacement set and bought a set of yokahama's and they have done 61000th/km with tread still left and the casings are sound
i dont believe in compromising safety for a cheap tyre thats all thats between you and the road
there is enough risks involved in being on the road
imho i dont need that one but everyone to their choice
no offence intended just my thoughts

Why is it that many people have the opinion that a cheap price always equals poor quality.?
It may mean that the manufacturer chooses higher turnover with less unit profit compared to lower turnover and higher unit profits.
Perhaps items made to the same specification in the same factory as the alleged superior brands, but with a lesser known brand name, needs more of a market push to raise the future marketability of the lesser known brand.
Sure, some cheaper items are inferior, and risks are attached with saving a few dollars, but surely it would be more beneficial if knowledgeable answers were given to the questions rather than blanket statements saying you don't trust a tyre because it is cheaper.
You can spend big bucks on known brand tyres that have worse road grip than cheaper and possibly safer tyres, but they may only last for half the distance.
Expensive does not necessarily mean better grip.
Dearer does not necessarily mean big kilometres.
Price is not necessarily relative.
You just have to remember one important thing.... The white lettering goes on the outside.
Shop around, and be safe.
Cheers

hi brushmarx
i would like to point out i didnt make a blanket statement and it was based on my own experience
i actually mentioned why i have gone to a dearer brand and it was a very good reason

for safety as opposed to having another set of cheap and nasty goodyears
no offence and maybe you didnt read all the threads
cheers

No dramas's Barry.
Your response wasn't necessarily the one I used for my comments.
Also, my response wasn't related only to tyres, but more a criticism of respones to queries on many other items including generators, tools, fridges, tents, trailers etc etc.
Didn't mean to be specific, so don't take it personally.
There are generally good reasons to stick to reputable brands and the attached prices, but the higher price does not necessarily mean good quality (or backup and service), it quite often only means better advertising budgets.
Cheers

Mate, the OP has clearly stated that his only criterea is price. Hence my comment. If he'd asked about cheap "quality" tyres that would be different.

Hey, MrBitchi.
No need to get all defensive, your point is noted.
However, the original OP did not say the "cheapest tyres", just cheap tyres, and I didn't see where he said the only criteria is price.
I didn't try and read between the lines, but assumed that as he wanted to buy new tyres, he has some concern for his daughters welfare, and would take into account there would be some degree of common sense, or he would probably re-groove the original tyres.
As barry said, he had Goodyears that seem to have delaminated at 20 000 km's. They are not necessarily cheap tyres in comparison to what is available, but the price didn't help him.
If there is such a thing as cheap quality tyres, I hope someone lets us know.
Cheers

Hi Twinkles,
Sorry i can't really help you with your question, but it reminds me of a yarn that a good mate told me one day. He use to work for a tyre mob as a mechanic and tyre fitter.
A bloke drove in one day with a Daihatsu Charade.
My mate asked him what he was after, the bloke answered, "A set of tyres for the Charade, I don't want to spend too much, It's only the wife's car"
A week later he came back in with his vehicle, It was a Crapped out old VN Dunny Door. But he had Goodyear 245/45ZR17's on it.
He didn't have a problem forking out the cash to replace all four of them. Go Figure?
Anyway, I've never been a scrooge when It's come to tyres. I might be lazy and not get out and air down, Hey John.

Not cheaper than that, but a good effective well priced tyre is the Federal Couragia- I have them on my 80, Dad put them on his TVan and we now have a friend with a set on his Patrol. They are $225 a tyre in 235/85R16 so would be cheaper in the smaller size you're after. Recommending them as I have tried & tested them! :)

Have fitted many sets of triangle tyres and believe them to be good value and good on/off the road.
Okay they are not $600 magic off-road mickey thompsons (or whatever)
but a good tyre nonetheless

Silverstone A/Ts are also excellent value for money (AT117s) they have a very similar pattern to the BFG. i fitted a set of them to my wifes friends Pathfinder for her and they have done 30k and look to do another 50 to 60 easily. they were about $150 ea IIRC fitted and balanced.

I agree had a set on a NP Pajero & we went everywhere. Never a problem. I paid $160 each & I think they are about $180 now from Hobbsey Off Road in M/ton I think. Remember there is no substitute for quality & your tyres are the only thing between YOU & THE ROAD!!

i can't imagine finding a new tyre of decent quality of that size for under $135, so based on what people have said about them, I would go with those.
