G'day all,
Just about to leave on our trip to WA via Townsville and Alice Springs.
Can anyone give some latest info on the state of Curtin Springs, Docker River and Warburton camp areas. The latest info I could find is 12 months or more old.
Thanks, Rod

I don't think Curtin Springs or Warburton will have changed very much. Warburton is in an enclosed (fenced) space at the back of the roadhouse and usually has a good covering of grass. Curtin Springs is somewhat similar though not enclosed. I've never stayed at Docker River but travel from Warburton to Curtin Springs in one go. It's a relatively easy one day drive.

Hi Rod

If staying at Docker River, you will have to take in wood with you. If it were me, I would stay at Warakurna rather that Warburton, as there is no trouble with the locals there, but again take in some wood. If you want to camp closer to Warburton, have you considered bush camping at Yarla Kutjarra Camping area, well north east of Warburton (Like about 90 kilometres). Great little spot and well off of the main road, here are the co-ordinates

S25 36 37 E127 13 26

Here are a couple of pictures of Docker River camp site and also Yarla Kutjarra

Cheers

Stephen

Hi Rod,
I can't give you recent information, though given a chooce between Docker River and Warburton ......... we would stay at Warakurna, lots of locals visited the roadhouse and workshop when we were there and we never felt threatened. Also a must see, is when the ballon goes up at nine am at the weather station and there is a very good display of Len Beadell artworks there too.

Cheers,
Wayne & Sally.

Hi Rod N, coming from WA had planned to stay at Warrakurma but were held up during the day by a fatal car accident and consequently only got to Warburton that night, we had a restful night there with no problems at all, strange though when we got to Warrakurma we were glad that we stayed at Warburton. Having said that it was about three years ago and it might have been a bad day at Warrkurma. Just my 2cents worth.
Make time to go through Giles, well worth it.

Cheers

Hi Rod

The Docker River campground was in it's usual state of disrepair when we were ther 2008, with no water and nothing working. Shame, because it is a lovely spot and showers have been provided (when they work!). A recent report said the water is now working (but for how long?). We made it to Warakurna easily after leaving from Yulara. It was a pleasant campground at the rear of the roadhouse and ideal for an early start to see the weather station and balloon launch.

Next stop was earlier than expected due to a strong headwind then a breakdown, but we camped in an old gravel pit screened from the road by a hill.

Third night was at a rest area before Cosmo Newbery which was ideal with tracks running out into the bush from the rear. Further tracks went some distance to an old road works camp site.

Enjoy your trip

G'day Motherhen,
Thanks for that. Yes a report on the caravaners forum from someone who had just done the trip (4 Jul) said the taps were working and toilets flushing. We plan to not to stop at Yulara, probably Curtin Springs and then Warakurna with Docker River an alternate if need be.
We will be near your home paddock a bit later down the track visiting Evan and Carol at Bridgie.
