Good morning everyone.

Could anyone point me in the right direction of a good brake specialist on the Gold Coast more specifically in the Southport area. We have a 17ft Jayco that has drum brakes and electric brakes that need to be done. If anyone could offer some advice and what we could expect would be a fair price to pay including machining. I would really appreciate it......

We are sick of getting ripped off and don't mind paying a fair price for a really good job....

Thank you all in advance

Andrea

Hi Andrea,I'm pretty sure they dont machine elec' brake drums,if they are no good they put new units on, you would need new magnets as well, as the magnets wear into the grooves in the old drums and if not replaced when you do the new drums a lot of braking will be lost until they wear in. Get a couple of prices. Regards Keith

Caravan brakes are very simple and can be adjusted from a hole in the backing plate without dismantling anything. However it is better practice to remove the drums, inspect and clean the brakes and check the wheel bearing at the same time. This can be done by any mechanic, doesn't have to be a brake specialist.
If the surface where the magnets rub on the drums are worn then as Keith said new magnets and drums will be required.
Subsequently the time and cost would depend on just what needed to be done.
The best idea is to remove the drums yourself to get an idea of what is reqired.

Thank you both...

My Husband has removed them and there is some gauging to the drums I think from the magnets.....So at a guess it means replacement of drums and new magnets......Bearings look good...Any idea's on where I may get new drums from? I just want to be up to speed when talking to my husband.......LOL

Thanks again

I have used Carafix at Southport a couple of times and found the service is very good. Phone 5591 4220 and speak to Greg (they have moved from Bailey Crescent to behind Cheapa Autos at Ashmore). When we bought our Dove from Tweed Jayco a couple of years ago, and had a minor electrical fault, Carafix was their recommended repairer. Last year we had our van's axles underslung.

I had untold brake problems till I went to Aussie Brakes on Kortum off Reedy Creek Road Burleigh. I know it is the other end of the coast to Southport, but service and results speak volumes by me.
Hope this may help.
Cheers neil
