Has anybody got any feed back to offer regarding engine oil for the 200 series v8 crusier, we are having the discussion regarding synthetic vs semi synthetic oils vs warranty issues etc.
Toyota as usual claim that you should only use genuine oil, as Toyota do not make oil we are wondering if there is a need to change the oil? Has Toyota specified the cheapest possible oil for
services?
It has so far been recommended to use a fully synthetic oil from either
Mobil or Castrol, any thoughts?

Most of the Toyota dealers use Castrol Magnatec as far as I know. Fully synthetic is also the trend.

My Toyota dealer sold me oil which is generic and has "For petrol and Diesel motors" on the label. At the price they charge it should be synthetic.
I now use Penrite HPR diesel 15 and havent had any troubles in over three years.
100ser has done 140,000 and has never needed a topup between
services.
Suggest you check out what Penrite recommend for a 200.
Autobarn have a 20% off sale at the moment including oils.

Penrite for sure.
i had a daewoo Lanos for 10 years, broke the timing belt at 176000 and bent 6 out of 8 valves. I only runit on penrite, did try a mineral oil and paid for it by noisey lifters. after that one episode, i went back to penrite nad have stayed ever since. I had the head rebuilt after timing belt break and the bores where like brand new, no lip no smoke, and the thing flew. i hammered the crap out of it nearly all the time.
Method to madness, good oil good filter= cheap insurance.
told to me by four mechanics with a combined experience of 120 years.

don't think you can blame a broken timing belt on the oil...could have more to do with hammering the crap out of it and exceeding belt replacement interval? ;)

Hi,
I've worked at a few Toyota dealerships over the years, one using Valvoline oil, one using Castrol and one did use the Genuine oil but now uses Castrol. The genuine oil is blended by
Caltex.
What brand dealers use has more to do with what deal they can arrange more so than what is the "best" oil.
I think as far as warranty goes if you use the oil as recommended in your service manual you shouldn't have a problem.
I use the mentioned genuine oil for petrol/diesel 20w 50, in the cruiser and never had a problem, just clocked 400k.
Cheers.

the info i have gathered on oils is that what ever you do stick to the same type of oil not necessarily the same brand but it must be the same receipe, thats in the small print on the lable, find your self a good oil depot and have a talk to someone who really cares about what they are doing ,you will find it quite interesting what the oil companys try to pull off.
being a younger car synthetic would be the go and castrol would be my c
choice.
cheers.

If you check Penrite they recommend HPR Diesel 5 for the V8 and that is what I use. They also do an oil Syn 5 that can be used in Diffs and Transmission.

Hi,
I use Amsoil Fully Synthetic Oils and have had a great experience with them.
I get them from www.lubricationmanagement.com.au (no affiliation, just a happy customer).
Have tried the usual suspects ie. valvoline, castrol, penrite etc.. and have settled on amsoil.
