hi, we are going to the Flinders Rangers and then on to Elliston on Eyre Peninsula and when I was studying the maps today I looked at the loop going from Hawker to Leigh creek, Marree, Roxby Downs detour to Andamooka then to Woomera. we will be towing a caravan that is not an off road version and wanted to know what the roads are like and if there would be any chance of the roads being flooded (we are going early August). and I also noticed a dirt road that goes from Glendambo (which is west of Woomera), Kingoonya to Wirrulla (above Streaky Bay) and wanted to know what this road is like as it would cut off a large slab of driving to get to Elliston.
thanks very much for any help from Chris.

Hi gonebush, i have travelled the areas you have mentioned. While my caravan is not an offroader it has tandem independant suspension with shockys and been beefed up underneath. Was up hawker leigh creek etc couple weeks ago and roads all good. Weather they will be flooded is in the hands of the gods at the time you travell. I assume you will go from marree up the oodnadatta track to the bore feild road and then down to roxby. With all the traffic out there now its hard to say iff the roads will be corrogated or not. From glendambo to wirilla it will be rough going unless the graders have been through in front of you. I know this doesnt help you much but the roads in the gawler ranges quite often are fairly rough iff you are towing a van. Have heard th c/v park in andamooka has been shut. Roxby you should book ahead. cheers mark

Hi Chris

No recent reports, but when we went Leigh Creek, Marree and on the Borefield Road to Roxby in 2006. The Borefield was OK, but a few days earlier had been virtually impassible due to rain. Road to Andamooka was no problem. Glendambo to Wirrulla was 250 kms of corrugations (our fridge suffered fatal injuries on this road). As with all dirt roads, it depends on how it is on the day. Ask when you get to a town near the intended road, and be prepared to take a longer route if it is bad; better than costly damage to your caravan.

G'day Chris.

I don't have any up-to-date info on the Flinders area, but we did the trip from Wudinna to Glandambo via the Gawler Ranges Nat Pk and Lake Gairdner about mid May.

We were towing a semi-off road van and just took it slowly (avg around 60kph) as there were a few washaways that I wouldn't like to come across at speed. Basically the road was corrugated but in reasonable condition. I believe they've had some rain there since we went through. As ever - drive to the conditions.

We overnighted at Lake Gairdner and the road in to the Nat Pk campground (no facilities) had one or two dry creek crossings / washaways but nothing that couldn't be handled with a bit of care. An alternative to seeing the Lake would be Mt Ive Station.

I've put some more details on our family blog.

Let me know if you want any more details. The West Coast of the Eyre Peninsula is spectacular. I hope you enjoy it!

Cheers,
(another) Chris.

In April this year we did a similar trip to the one you are planning.

All the roads you've mentioned were open, and either had been recently graded or were in very good condition. We didn't do Glendambo to Wirrulla; we did Googs Tk.

The Borefield Rd was pretty much 80kph all the way. There were two wet sections (very short) just south of Marree.

The roads in the Gammon and Flinders were excellent.

Have a good trip.

We travelled from Marree six days ago and the track from Marree to the Bore Track is in reasonable condition with a couple of bad spots. On the whole pretty good.
Have a good trip.

Hi Gonebush,
I did Hawker to Maree last week. The unsealed sections from Leigh Creek South to Maree were in reasonable condition. Very few corregations, some shallow wheel tracks on it from when it had been wet and some stoney patches. We passed non-offroad vans, boats and yachts and most of them seemed to be doing around 70 to 80 kph. We didn't see anyone with a flat or having any trouble until the other side of Coward Springs which was the roughest part of the Oodnadatta Track. All the best.

TJ..
