Morning folks, doing my daily read on the forum....allways good stuff...
we are currently awaiting my wifes medical results/ visa application...
Question for you (international readers maybe?)

Can anyone enlighten us regarding arranging/obtaining insulin whilst touring Australia for 12 months?

Regards,
Geoff

They only provide things like test strips and needles - no insulin and what they do supply you have to buy at a subsidised rate.

Insulin and other prescription items can only be provided on presenting a script.

I suggest you contact the people on the above link to find out how your overseas scripts can be used here or how to get Aust scripts.

Hi Geoff,

Check if you are from a country that has reciprocal rights for health. The UK does (for one country) and so you might be able to get medicines on our health benefits scheme.

Cheers,
Bruce and Di

As cycadcentre said, make the diabeties association your first call.

Wife is also diabetic, but we have not travelled for no more than a few months at a time.
Have called in at the diabeties association shop in Darwin and a few other places for supplies.

Don't see it being a problem with out a bit of forethought as you are doing.

Assume you will bring prescriptions with you and access local chemists?

Hi Geoff,
I am a Type 1 Diabetic and I am currently writing from the Ayres Rock Camp Ground. We are on a 3 month holiday and thus far I am experiencing excellent diabetes control. I have a prescription for my insulin and I am also carrying 3 months supply in my fridge. If needed I will be able to obtain insulin in most towns that have a chemist although in some more remote places I would need to wait a couple of days.

I would recommend that you search for the Diabetes Australia Website and find a contact number. They will give you good advice on how to go about it. All the best for your holiday in Australia. Great to see your wife is getting out and about. Diabetics can do anything!

Cheers,

TJ..
