Hi all,

We have just been discussing a trip to Ularu and how long we need to take to get there and back comfortably. Nissan Patrol 3ltr towing a POD Trailer 750kg with 3 kids.
How long is it worth staying there, is there much to see?
All information and opinions welcome,

Cheers

Hi Rob and Donna

We stayed three nights at Yulara camp ground, which included a day trip to Kata Tjuta and doing the walks there. We arrived on the first day during a dust storm, so visiting Uluru was out of the question. The next morning it was calm and we spend most of the day doing the walk around the rock and visiting the cultural centre. We chose not to do the climb. The following day was spent at Kata Tjuta.Check our my Three Rocks trip report in My Blog section.

How long to get there? - depends from where.

Hi Rob and Donna

Depends on age of children and how they travel, but 400 kms per day would be enough for most youngsters. Particularly if they are young, shorter stretches with time for them to run around and do activities that appeal to them would be desirable. Four hours with my children in a car was hell - even half an hour to go shopping could be torture. We left our travel until we could leave them behind.

Hi Motherhen,

Girl 8, Boy 11, Girl 14......... 14yr old may not go......not cool to be with parents unless her friends can come too, will need a bus for that. Do you think 2 weeks is enough to stop and see things or 3 weeks better?

Cheers Rob

Hi Rob and Donna

Teenagers can be like that. I always enjoyed travel regardless of age, but my brood were not so keen.

You will be driving a long way to see just one thing if you take only two weeks. Even three will be pretty well a one destination journey. It also depends on what of interest you will pass along the way if you haven't been that way before. Our trip to Yulara and return to SW of WA took four months! But that did include the Kimberley. We spent around five weeks touring in and around Alice Springs, but that included a bit of r&r, catching up on laundry and shopping. Kings Canyon rim walk was the best walk of the area, so if you can keep the youngsters away from the edge, consider including this in your agenda.

Only you can decide how far per day is enough, and what of interest you will pass. Stopping and doing things along the way will be more enjoyable for your children too than sitting in a car saying "are we there yet?".

3 nights at yulara would be right as motherhen says, tell the 14yo to pull her head in and come, our 13yo was quite happy to be with us......
uluru and kata tjuta are best with a day on each, the uluru basewalk of 10km one day and the valley of the winds (kata tjuta) at 7.4 km are each good days out in their own right.

on the travel distance, we have twice done 900+km with the kids, only on a first day. this trip our biggest day was bordertown to port germein, 550km maybe. days can be extended if you have a dvd in the car by maybe 2 hours but even then days on end get quite wearing......

all that said there are stacks of EO members up here, seen 6 or 7 in the last 24 hours, most I've seen outside a gathering.

Hi Rob and Donna,
If you ar egoing to stay at Yulara Campground then book a site for your pod trailer in the 100's on the outside boundary of the campground. These are the quietest sites here. After staying here on Tuesday night we cancelled our next 2 nights as our site behind the reception building and close to the large school groups was too noisy and we couldn't drive a peg in. Buses ideled past our camp at all hours.

We went to Kings Creek Station (which was fantastic) for two nights and came back to Ayres Rock today. Our current site is great with a nice sand dune behind us. Saw a Dingo get into the neighbours rubbish earlier. 3 Nights is spot on timing for a stay here. Bring some tough tent pegs and a good mallett. Have a good one.

We travelled to Uluru 5 years ago towing a Jayco Swan with a 12 yo and a 14 yo. We are teachers so only had 2 weeks travelling from Melbourne. Did a couple of 700+ km days. Spent 4 days at Uluru and then travelled on to Alice.
We even had 2 days on the way back at Mildura so anything is possible if you really want to see 'out there'.

Before we left - when we told friends where we were going - they asked "Who are you flying with .....?"

The best trip we have ever done.

Hi

Just got back yesterday from a four week trip out there from the Sunshine coast Qld. with two kids and a camper trailer. We allowed a week to get out there via the Plenty highway, two weeks exploring the Centre and a week to get back, which had to be altered as rain closed the Plenty so we had to return the long way via Mount Isa. We found three nights at Yulara was enough, allowed us a full day at the rock including a climb to the top. (don't count on being able to do this as it's closed for climbing more than it's open nowadays). And a day at The Olgas. You have to buy a three day pass to get into the park, which costs $25/adult. I don't know what time of year you're thinking of going, but June/July is very busy and very cold, everywhere is jammed packed with caravans mostly from Victoria.

Hope this helps
Jon

We just got back last night from Uluru as well, travelling from Cairns, FNQ.
Two weeks was just about right, although we had a few nights in Alice and a couple of nights in Winton as well. We were travelling with our 15 and 14 year old children in the car (100 series). We were going to travel home via the Plenty highway, but the rain stopped that.

Apart from the rain, and freezing cold we had a good time. We even got to set off some fireworks on Territory day, yippee...
