I know there was alot of cosmetic changes in the 100 series but was there any difference in the turbo diesel motors are all the turbo diesel engines the same ?? Any known issues with them ?? Are the motors as good as the 80 series turbo diesels (which were a great motor, refering to the multivalve 95/97) Is this the same motor in the 100 series ?? Obviously there was a difference some where along the lines in the 100 series as I have seen a few with 5 speed auto. Thankyou Regards Steve M

others will have better info but im sure all TDs in the 100 are identical
it is pretty much the same motor as the late model 80 TD with elecronically controlled fuel pump (there may
well be a few oher minor differences internally but I dont know)
and of course the 100 had an intercooler
not sure when but later model 100s had the 5 speed auto

80 series t/d were 1hd-t 12 valve motor , had big end faults . once repaired with correct bearings ,a great motor. after 1995 1hdt-ft 24 valve motor .2000 1hdt-fte (100 series) all good motors

A750F (5 speed auto) started Sept 02.
No known issues with 1HD-FTE that I know of except inability to burn lots of fuel, frightening power and inconvenient longevity (for manufacturers).
5speed auto is smooth and as far as Ive seen extremely reliable.

Thats a great link. I am tipping the 100 series diesel with low km's and in good nick could become a bit of a sought after vehicle. the new 200 series is dearer and susceptible to common rail diesel issues.

dont think the D4D v8 is common rail
all toyota turbo TDs are highly sought and fetch
well aove market rates
- cant see the 200 being any different

D4D V8 is Common Rail. The difference between the 100 series and 200 series when it comes to injector maintenance is huge:
100 Series 4.2 - Mechanical Injectors - Easily Serviceable, minimal cost
200 Series D4D - Common rail - Cannot be serviced at this point, need to be replaced at around $800-1000 each if fouled by bad diesel or other matter.
To replace 8 Injectors on a D4D would be a fortune whereas the 100 series could be serviced for around $600-900 in total.
Many of the Toyota service managers believe the 100 series to be the best vehicle they have made. The 200 series is always overlooked. They would have their reasons and opinions obviously.

Yeah had a look there was one for just over $60k..! They average around $50k and go down as the kms go up.

As stated above.
Early 80"s had bigend issues, later 80"s where the pick, hard to find a good one less than $25000.
100 series T/D's where pretty much the same motor except it was electronically controlled, a lot of bushies are suspicious of anything electronic (one told me electronics on diesel is the work of the devil !!) but they seem to have proved reliable, there are plenty T/D's putting around paddocks now,
There is a Patrol running around with thr T/D and 5 speed auto combination, not an easy conversion or cheap but from all accounts
well worth the effort.
