I have a Garmin Etrex, just the one you get for about $200, middle of the range in the etrex.
The speed rating I have found to be entirely accurate. Yet I have a Navman also and I have found this to me 3-4km out.
The Navman doesnt show tracks, 4wd routes or anything like that. I was up the
Gibb River Rd and it showed that but not much else.
To go seriously offroad you need a GPS giving you your co-ordinates and a good topo map.
So if you arent leaving the sealed road, a Navman will show the roads and be fine, bit if you are going onto 4wd tracks, get the topo maps.

I boought a GPS from Kogan, on line. They were recently for sale for about $149.00.
After its purchase I added the Hema range of maps by converting them to Windows CE. They work as
well as any of the known brands. I have had
mine for 2 years now.
There have been no problems at all with this one, at least for me.
Cheers
