Gday,
There has been a few debates recently about speed cameras, speeding, statistics and the road toll etc. and thought some of you may find this interesting.
Crash test
Cheers

Wow. Must show that to my 90+ year old mother. She's regul;arly sounding off about how cars today aren't built like they used to be. She's right.

Were some interesting comments with the video ... about the rust cloud that appeared during the impact ... quite possible the ol girl was one of those salted roads vehicles, where it was just the paint holding it together.
The panels looked to pop off easily too ???? .... coupla prangs Ive been in - the panels were always still there - crumpled - and the fitting bolts a cow to get to.
Good video tho .... much more thought inspiring than those obviously contrived ones put out as "road safety" campaigns.
And it certainly shows hows
well new vehicles crumple to protect the passenger compartment .......

Like these old Fords, thump-em with the fist and it'll hurt, might make a bit of a dent with a good hammer.

Perhaps people would drive more carefully if cars did not have all those safety features

I guess they didn't Ray because that is where we came from - better engineering across roads and cars is almost the only un-controversial factor that can be shown to consistently have a positive effect.
Its taken a while (remember the years when you would get all those comments about Tin-foil cars costing a fortune to repair) -
well they still cost a fortune to repair I guess , but finally saftey has become a real factor in car purchases - mind you we still have a way to go with some 4wd's.

Ray,
And if they didn't they would only do it once..........would certainly get some idiots off the street and in turn make them safer????
Certainly is another way to look at it.
Cheers

G'Day Robin ....
Was just highlighting that misconception some have ... lol
I think the best safety feature that a 4wd could have fitted ... to deal with the "r...over" word - Would be a great big sticker on the dashboard that stated ......
CAUTION ... YOU ARE NO LONGER DRIVING A 2WD DUNNEYDORE FOOLCAN.

Today we live in a more fast paced society, drive faster, use our cars more. So really the extra safety was born out of necessity.
Still I wouldn't say that example holds true across the board though, like compare a Barina or something against a heavy and big old classic? All I'm saying is that there is a lot of variables out on the road I wouldn't like to generalize on this one video and take it as my Bible that all modern cars are better than all old cars.
It certainly proves a point though!

As far as Im concerned all the safety features in the world dont make up for not knowing how to drive properley. both of those crash
test dummies seem to drive a lot better than some of the idiots on the road today.
Also C'mon they didnt get that Old Chevy brand new out of a Detroit motor museum, Its probably done 20 years on salty roads and then left to corrode away in some junk yard for another 40 years before being spruced up for the
test.
