The person that bought my 100 series has advised me that toyota want $2000 for a spare key as his is not a Master Key.

Can anyone advise if they have come accross this and is there another way to get one?

We have a few year old Corolla and the master key from Toyota is $380. It should be the same for your model..... same technology.... If you buy it from a key cutting guy like key master, it is about $350.. that gives you the keyless remote and the smart key anti theft . If you buy the key with anti theft only without the keyless remote as we did, it cost $150 from keymaster key cutters Hope this helps. Michael

If there are no master keys left (did you lose them?) then I believe that it is around $2000 to replace or reprogram the relevant computer module (whatever it is called). So it isn't actually for the key. No masters can be made without a master to begin with, I believe. Lcool has a bit more detail and probably does a better job of explaining it than I did :)

I got a main key replaced for a VXII Berlina for $95 in Caboolture.
They plugged a handheld programer module into the car and 10mins later we were away
I did however have another master key as well

It is the key that has the circuit board in it with the keyless locking buttons on it.
I opened it up and the battery was flat.
One day I will solder a new one in and see if it will work again.

Kimba, don't know where you got your info from but you are seriously wrong. The key cut is no more expensive than a normal two sided key to cut. The programming of the new remote is just a matter of turning on the ignition with the new key and plugging in a Tech2 and voila.....2 minutes and you're gone.

Most Holden dealers have a minimun workshop charge so at worst you'd pay for 1 hours labour.

Agree with Fab. I recently purchased a 100 series and the dealer gave me an extra key or two and one of the extra remotes (from some other landcruiser I guessed and he got them mixed up) did not lock doors etc. Just followed the instructions and the car computer/alarm system teaches the new remote to speak to it and violla I now have another remote that speaks to my Bruiser (all one needs to do is follow some crazy button pressing and turning ignition key on and off at the correct timing sequence as noted in the instructions for the remote to match it- my remote also arms the toyota alarm system)
Will send instructions if needed.

I think you will find keys and remotes are a different kettle of fish

I have bought extra remotes and followed the sequence and they work.

However as far as I know a master key is different in that it has an embedded chip peculiar to the car.
IE you cant start the car with someone elses key even if it was cut the same.

The key electronically initialises itself to a module in the car to enable it to go.
The Haynes Manual only says the switch can be taken apart as separate modules in the 100ser.

I may be wrong but understand that this is part of the immobiliser system.

Hi all,
The master key does have a chip in it for the immobiliser, as such you need this to program any other key. What you would have been quoted would be for the new ECU and keys and fitting(i guess). As Graham said you can't use another key without having a master to program it.
It's something that should be printed on the front cover of all modern vehicles in large red letters don't lose your master key.
If you check out a good locksmith I beleive they may be able to clone the key you have.

Good Luck

definitly would be contacting locksmiths
- they would come accross this all the time and if anyone can point you in the right direction they could

alot simpler I know but I lost my 80 key and old school imobaliser key thingy

the locksmith cut the key and gave me the card for the place to replace the immobaliser thingy

hi carlsp
on certain 100 series models you have to replace the engine ecu if you lose the master key but on most models you only have to replace the transponder ecu which is still expensive but not quite the $2000 dollars quoted, if you pm me the vin no. of your car I can double check for you and even send you the manual for the procedure of replacing the master key if you like so you can see whats involved and understand why it is expensive. sthomas@nunatoyota.com.au
Cheers Stevie

just remember with Toyota's you can't program new keys without the master key unless you replace the engine ecu or transponder ecu

carisp,

LCOOL about keys click here

LCOOL's technical forum has a thread regarding keys, there seems to be a couple of version in the thread.

1. Only Toyota can provide and program a new key ($900 quoted)
2. That a decent locksmith can do the programing, killing off all old/lost keys etc for about $500.

Have a read it should help you.

I got a spare key cut for my 105 series (assuming identical key barrel etc etc) from a generic locksmith in a shopping centre. Took em 15mins and $120 later I had a spare.

just curios as to why this is your problem?

a car dealer will often only sel a vehicle with 1 key , if you want more , you organise them

hes bought the vehicle and now its his

Ok here you go

Talked to local Mr Minit and heres what he said.

You only need a MASTER KEY to ENTER PROGRAMMING MODE.

Another Slave key which he can provide will start the car OK

Yes if you have no master keys you will have to shell out the big bucks unless you can find a locksmith that has the gear to reprogram one ( maybe possible)

So hope thats helpfull and the post has been about KEYS NOT REMOTES.

So let me get this straight

he can make another fully functioning key ?? which i assume contains the imobaliser

or he cant because a master key is neded?

whats the difference betweeen a master key and a slave key if they both start the car?

Read the third line.

Isnt that plain enough

He can clone a slave key.

If you havent got a master key and you want to initialise a new remote you need the master key to do the flick ign on and off 19 times.
If you havent got one you cant or so the man said.
In a 100 ser like mine the central locking is a seperate unit so you dont heed a key to lock it.
