hi, we live in the southwest and we are developing an interest for gold detecting. just wondering if anyone has been successful in finding gold in the southwest of W.A? there is an old gold
mine in
Donnybrook, but, looking for anyone who has had some luck along the Darling scarp area or elsewhere?? thanks, jen.

hi jennyb
there is a gold
mine at boddington with a 25yr plus projected future but i think its down deep and is an open cut for that reason dont know if anyone has actually found any apart from the
mine site itself
have never heard of any been found in
donnybrook in the 30yrs i have lived in bunbury its basicly a legend from the past
otherwise why isnt there a big goldmine there right now with the current price of gold????????
suppose to be gold at margaret river according to a book recently written but me thinks the gold is in the sales of the book?????
cheers

The only gold in
Donnybrook is called fern gold. It literally looks like a fern leaf. I havent heard of anyone finding any in yrs.
Best place is still the gold fields kal,
Nullagine etc.

Peter

That area is predominatly
granite wich does not host gold
there are small patches of potentially gold hosting greenstones but these are covered with thick cap
rock making exploration for it difficult
basically - not really

What about when quartz is associated with the
granite - which it very often is.

Hi Jennyb
Have a look at old maps of gold mines or go online to Department of Mines and Petroleum and
sign on to TENGRAPH Online and you will find between
Donnybrook and Goldfields Road just out of town there was lots of old gold mines and alluvial area's, (
old mine names were Star of the West,Hunters Venture, The Wild Wave) still you don't know if there will be gold there and all these area are have dieback risk,if you find gold let me know and don't tell anyone else.

Map from A Prospectors Guide to Metal Detecting in Australia - Gold & Ghosts Volume 2 Western Australia (out of print)
Image Could Not Be Found
As others have pointed out I dont think you'll have much joy metal detecting in the south west. Most if not all the finds were relatively small and the gold not in "nugget" form. If you manage to find any gold with a metal detector down this way I would guess you will be close on the first to do so.
Also a lot of the old leases are now on private property. The Trigwell family have rebuilt the poppet head over the original Hunters Venture
mine (see above map) and turned the working orchard into a popular tourist attraction.
Cheers
Greg

I've been interested in this as
well, living here in the South West and having done a Geology course at tafe in my younger days. Haven't looked into it but I thought what a nice hobby prospecting would be.
I did read on a 4x4 site once something about some colour in a river near Donnelly River somewhere (some 4x4 location) but I guess alluvial isn't exactly what you're after with a metal detector either!
That was what kind of sparked my interest originally though, I still have a gold pan somewhere in the shed, not that it's ever seen any use. Oh
well guess I'll keep dreaming then.
Good time to get into that sort of thing though with the gold price being so high!

Jen,
few years back I was working a
mine (between Capel and
Donnybrook) located on the edge of the scarp. The geologist showed me some quartz and it had small nuggets in it, that had gone through the sceen plant. It was the only stuff we found we every found. But it is out there!
cheers
