Birdsville track

Just got back from a lightning trip up the Birdsville track. What a great time to drive it, ferry in operation, water over the track, mud in abundance. It sort of brought out the kid in me. Added bonus that the charity veteran cars were doing the track at the same time. I passed a broken or bogged one about every 50 kms. No matter they had support crews. Looked like great fun.
An excellent time was had by all....which was just me. Mike

We had an enjoyable drive down from Birdsville - Friday 16th & Sat 17th July, straight after the track was re-opened after 2 days of being closed - like you say mud, water, in long stretches, deep wheel ruts and even 80cm water to cruise through with Frome Creek just north of Marree. At one stage we were encountering long water or mud stretches on an average of one per minute.
Tippipilla Creek also had a good strong deep flow! 60cm plus deep and wide to boot.
More water in the desert in three days of travel than we have seen any where else on tour! Thats Australia - boggy roads in the desert in the centre of the driest continent.
Still cleaning up the Toyota on weekends!
We were camped a few k north of Poeppel Crnr when the rain dumped all night and continued all the next day, so we had from there to Birdsville as well!
Made the sand hills a breeze to drive though! The swales - well they were a different matter! What an experience. And the desert was like a florist shop!

I would have been a bit worried doing it on my own when you did it. It seems it dried out a lot for my trip but was still really enjoyable. The rally veterans probably would have had no hope. I also couldn't believe how much water was around Big Red. Cheers.

Not a worry - were a convoy of 2 and due to wet sand it was a Sunday afternoon doddle across the desert really!
The track was more of worry but then it was quite busy as well.
