Yes 5th gear spline, and main shaft, had ground out, and has been replaced.

What a joke, and Mr Nissan should bow his head in shame to allow that set up to get thru QA....

Anyway, Got the clutch replaced with a heavy duty PBR job, whilst gearbox was out. That had bad wear too. And guess what that clutch rattle has stopped. Any wonder, as the clamping springs (suppose you call them that), were loose and worn, and there were groves etched into the lutch plate too.
As I said, the previous owner must have give it stick

All up cost $2600. ( inc. clutch )

Have grabbed the main shaft, and 5th gear as a souvineer (spelling ?) and will mount it in my shed.

I hope never to add other bits.. After all I only ever put foto's there in the past.

Cheers to all and thanks for support

Bucky

I'm in the process of doing a similar job on a 79 series Toyota. It has done the spline and sleeve between the gearbox and transfer box which has to have the input shaft of the transfer box replaced. Also replacing the clutch as well. And for the travellers on the Pacific Hwy North of Kempsey on Tuesday sorry about being a hindrance I could not tow any faster we had to much weight on the back of the trailer, anything past 70ks promoted the death wobbles until the wheel fell off at Fredo Corner at 7 pm in the rain. Yeah mate !
It's all go, but I will adjust the free play on my new clutch, if possible.

As an Ex-truck driver, although not for that long, I only feather the clutch, working on the thoery that smooth gear changes, stop damege..
So much for that theory eh !

Bucky, I suspect you would have a very good chance with putting in a claim with Fair Trading as the item supplied by Nissan wasn't "Fit for purpose" and in fact Nissan re engineered the item to prevent exactly what happened to you.
When you get back home get out all your details and expenses and present Nissan with the opportunity to recompense you for out of pocket expenses.
If they don't come to the party explain that you will be putting a claim in to Fair Trading and letting them determine if the item failed due to circumstances out of your contol.
You may have them already but below are the pics of the original unit alongside the new one. Copy the pics and send them in to Nissan so they know that you know why the unit failed.
Regards Andrew.

To All

Now that I have our Patrol back, I will be approaching Nissan for the cost.
Have an itemised account that will be sent to them.
Thanks for the tip about the Office of Fair Trading.

Wish me luck

Did the $2600 cover just the parts or parts and fitting. Seems to be a good price if it was for both.

Yes that was for everything.
I was very happy with all that, and the best part, it was worthwile coming home 1500km, to get it done. I have used the Boy's at Leongatha before.
In chatting with the Nissan Dealer, in Walla, they Quoted me $2700 plus.

Cheers
Bucky

Hi Bucky,

All that work for $2600, that's real good. I thought that it would have cost a lot more than that. Just shows you that it pays to shop around and not just go to Mr Nissan for the repairs.

Thanks for taking the time to post that Bucky - the pictures really helped understand the issue - my car . early 2002 is in that possible window although it seems ok.
Had a related drama recently (clutch straight to floor) hope to post it if time this week.
